Job Highlights

Legacy of Hope is a nonprofit organ procurement organization (OPO) serving more than five million people throughout Alabama. Together with our community, Legacy of Hope saves lives through organ and tissue donation, honors the legacy and generosity of donors, and supports donor families in their time of need. Legacy of Hope serves two transplant centers in Alabama: UAB Hospital and Children's of Alabama.

Job Description

The Organ Placement Coordinator (OPC) is a critical position which requires the ability to think critically and quickly determine the best course of action in the highly dynamic organ donation process. The role encompasses the allocation of organs, their surgical recovery, perfusion, packaging and transportation. The OPC will be trained to perform assigned role responsibilities. The OPC will receive organ import offers from outside agencies and communicate those offers to the appropriate local transplant surgeon utilizing some developed pathways and their own critical thinking skills as most situations are difficult to cover with protocols/pathways. The OPC will track all pending organ offers and update appropriate parties as indicated. If an organ is accepted, the OPC coordinates the travel arrangements related to recovery and transport. The OPC will participate in abdominal organ allocation for local LoH donors which will require this individual to have excellent communication skills, judgment and follow-through. OPCs are required to complete all documentation accurately and promptly. The OPC is expected to comply with all LoH standard operating procedures (SOPs), local, state, and federal requirements as applicable. This is a remote position and requires 12-15 days of 24-hour call per month, or the equivalent of 12 hour shifts (3-4 shifts/wk) with rotating day/night shifts. Organ Placement Coordinators schedules include weekends and holidays with on call responsibilities as scheduled.

Qualifications

Required: Vocational certificate or degree in Nursing, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, Respiratory Therapy, Surgical Technologist or biological sciences degree required. Should be licensed or certified within their field of practice as applicable. Previous surgical or medical experience in the organ or tissue donation industry may substitute for education requirements.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree, CPTC, or CPT certification, prior experience at an organ procurement organization.
