Job summary

Cowboy Space Corp. is seeking an Ordnance Engineer to own every energetic device on the vehicle, from pyro-valves to initiators, and to manage the ground handling and compliance of energetics.

You will work with Flight Safety and Range Safety to ensure safety and mission readiness, running qualification campaigns and writing procedures for live installations on the pad as the first-hire in this discipline. This role requires hands-on qualification experience, strong MIL-STD-1576 knowledge, and

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, chemical, or electrical engineering required.
  • 5–10 years of ordnance, pyrotechnics, or energetic systems experience on launch vehicles, missiles, or spacecraft.
  • Hands-on experience taking an ordnance device or initiation train through qualification.
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-1576 and associated hazard classification, quantity-distance rules, and DoD/ATF ground handling requirements.
  • Electrical fluency to discuss firing chains, currents, margins, ESD and RF susceptibility, and to demonstrate inadvertent initiation cannot happen.
  • Deep knowledge of energetic materials, formulations, aging, compatibility, and environmental effects.
  • Excellent written communication; procedures will be used by others and on hardware that may fail.
  • Experience standing up an explosives site plan, magazine, or ATF license from scratch.

Responsibilities

  • Define the ordnance architecture for the vehicle and identify pyro-actuated valves or mechanisms.
  • Specify and qualify hardware: initiators, detonators, safe-and-arm devices, through-bulkhead initiators, and related lines.
  • Own the energetics side of initiation: no-fire and all-fire current, margins, and inadvertent-initiation analysis.
  • Own environmental and susceptibility cases: HERO, RF susceptibility, bonding/grounding, thermal, vibration, and shock.
  • Run component-, subsystem-, and full-system qualification campaigns with MIL-STD-1576-compliant testing.
  • Manage hazard classification, net explosive weight, and explosive site planning: distance arcs and siting.
  • Stand up storage/magazine licensing and compliance with ATF, DOT, and DESR 6055.09 / DoD 4145.26-M.
