Job summary

Applied Materials, Inc. in Austin, TX is seeking an Orbital Welder to join our precision fabrication team. You will use orbital welding equipment to build, repair, and test mechanical and vacuum assemblies used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Responsibilities include setup, inspection, and documentation of welds to strict quality standards in a cleanroom-adjacent environment, with emphasis on repeatability and safety. Travel up to 10% may be required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical diploma/associate preferred.
  • Completion of formal welding and orbital welding training program preferred.
  • 1–3 years of hands-on welding experience in manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductor, or high-purity fabrication; orbital/TIG experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate orbital welding equipment to join stainless steel and specialty alloy tubing, fittings, and vacuum components to exacting quality standards.
  • Read and interpret work orders, operation sheets, blueprints, WPS, and P&ID drawings to determine weld sequence, joint prep, and acceptance criteria.
  • Perform mechanical assembly, disassembly, troubleshooting, and repair of vacuum, gas delivery, and pneumatic subassemblies.
  • Inspect welds visually and with precision measuring and leak-detection instruments; document defects or nonconformances.
  • Purge, weld, and verify high-purity gas and chemical delivery lines to semiconductor cleanliness standards.
  • Use test fixtures, measurement equipment, leak detectors, and vacuum pumps to test finished assemblies and components.
  • Maintain travelers and records of work performed including progress, labor, and material usage in MES/ERP systems.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot orbital welding heads and power supplies; escalate to equipment issues as needed.
  • Observe safety standards; keep a clean, safe work area; report hazards promptly.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying inefficiencies and recommending corrective actions.
