Job summary

Newport Hospital and Health Services seeks a skilled Surgical Technologist to assist surgeons during procedures and ensure the operating room is prepared and sterile. You will handle instruments, drapes, and supplies, while monitoring counts and patient safety across ages from neonate to geriatric.

Participation in improvement activities and on-call duties are expected. Minimum requirements include a Surgical Technology program graduate and CST or Registered Technician, with BCLS certification

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology program.
  • Current BCLS Certification.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) or Registered Surgical Technician.
  • Minimum of one year in OR/sterile processing.

Responsibilities

  • Assists surgeon during operative and invasive procedures.
  • Prepares operating room with instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.
  • Cleans and sterilizes surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Demonstrates aseptic technique and maintains patient safety.
  • Notifies licensed staff when patient reports pain and adapts care for patients of all ages.
  • Positions, preps, and drapes patients for procedures; completes counts accurately.
  • Takes call as assigned and participates in performance improvement activities.

Job description

Primary Scheduled Hours: 72 hours per pay period (4, 9 hour days)

Pay Scale: Compensation within the posted range will be determined based on relevant experience and internal equity considerations.

Job Summary: Assists surgeon during operative and invasive procedures. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitors PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies. Cleans and sterilizes all surgical instruments. Participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities. Responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following established infection prevention and control practices. Directs and checks the work of others in the absence of management staff. Willingness to accept new ideas and work under stressful conditions. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities. Takes Call as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Interacts professionally with patients and family.
  • Provides patients with explanations and verbal reassurance, as necessary.
  • Notifies appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain.
  • Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients for treatment.
  • Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
  • Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating RN and surgeon and/or corrects immediately.
  • Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
  • Maintains safe environment for patient, co-workers, and self, per hospital policies and procedures.
  • Checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
  • Protects patient’s sensitivities and right to privacy; closely observes patient with minimal disturbance.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Follows aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Education Background and Experience Requirements

Minimum Education:

Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.

Graduate of a Surgical Technology program.

Required Licensure / Certifications:

Current BCLS Certification. Call is required for this position with 30-minute response time.

Required Experience:

Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or Registered Surgical Technician.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in the operating room/sterile processing.

Successful candidates typically begin between the beginning and midpoint of the compensation range dependent on qualifications/experience and receive compensation in increments increases annually.
