Rochester Regional Health is seeking a Surgical Technologist for Unity Hospital's Operating Room. You will prepare, organize, and manage surgical instruments and supplies, maintaining a sterile field throughout procedures.

The role requires adherence to aseptic technique, instrument passing to the surgeon, and assisting with draping, counts, and post-operative care. 40 hours/week, 7a-5:30p, with 10-hour shifts on weekdays.

Qualifications

  • Must graduate from an accredited Surgical Technology program with certification within 12 months.
  • Alternatively, graduate from an accredited practical nursing program and meet clinical requirements.
  • Eligible under grandfathering or hard-to-fill clauses with documented practice or training.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, organize, and manage surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Set up and maintain sterile field with strict aseptic technique.
  • Pass instruments to surgeon during procedures and assist with draping.
  • Maintain counts with circulating nurse and prepare instruments for sterilization.
  • Support OR staff, stock rooms, and assist with post-operative care.

Job Title: Surgical Technologist

Department: Operating Room

Location: Unity Hospital 1555 Long Pond Road Rochester, NY 14626

Hours Per Week: 40 Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7a - 530p (10 hr Shifts)

SUMMARY

The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role as a key member of the surgical team, serving as the primary scrub technologist during procedures. This individual is responsible for preparing, organizing, and managing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment to ensure efficient and safe operations. The Surgical Technologist maintains strict adherence to sterile techniques and demonstrates continuous attention to preserving the integrity of the sterile field throughout each procedure.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain a minimum of 15 Continuing Medical Education hours annually.
  • Prepare and check instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Set up and maintain a sterile field, following strict aseptic techniques.
  • Assist with patient draping and ensure the surgical team is properly attired.
  • Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
  • Perform accurate sponge and sharp counts with the circulating nurse.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization.
  • Support specialty surgical services and stock OR rooms as needed.
  • Prepare sterile dressings and assist with post-operative care.
  • Help orient new staff and contribute to unit goals and objectives.
  • May handle medications, sharps, and syringes on the sterile field.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Graduated from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 12 months of graduation.
  • Graduated from an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • Qualify under the "Grandfathering Clause" by providing proof of at least one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between December 31, 2010, and December 31, 2014.
  • Qualify under the "Hard-to-Fill Clause" by graduating from an accredited program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 24 months of hire.
New Graduates
  • Official transcript from accredited school or letter emailed directly from the school's registrar's office confirming program completion will be accepted upon graduation.
  • Primary source education verification required within 90 days of start date.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy - Clinical - Heavy clinical roles require continual lifting of more than 50 lbs., pushing and pulling patients or equipment, and working in physically awkward or restrictive positions. Staff must maintain balance and coordination in confined, uneven, or emergent care settings while performing both fine and gross motor tasks. High sensory acuity is needed to recognize patient cues and environmental alerts. Emotional and cognitive demands are significant due to urgent decision-making, managing distressed patients, and functioning effectively in high-pressure clinical situations. Environmental exposures commonly include infectious agents, biohazards, noise, and chemicals. Employees may be required to complete mask-fit testing, TB screening, and participate in extended or on-call shifts.

PAY RANGE: $28.05 - $34.17
