Job summary

Rochester Regional Health is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join the Operating Room team at Unity Hospital in Rochester, NY. The role is per diem with Day, Evening, and Night shifts, supporting sterile technique and instrument handling during procedures.

The position requires completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program with certification within 12 months, or alternative nursing/ grandfathering pathways. Heavy clinical duties and on-site work in Rochester 14626 are expected.

Qualifications

  • Must have completed a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program and obtain certification within 12 months of graduation.
  • Graduate from an accredited school of practical nursing may qualify.
  • Eligible for grandfathering if you worked as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between 2010-2014.
  • Hard-to-fill clause allows qualification after certification within 24 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a minimum of 15 Continuing Medical Education hours annually.
  • Prepare and check instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Set up and maintain a sterile field with aseptic techniques.
  • Assist with patient draping and attire of the surgical team.
  • Pass instruments to the surgeon during procedures.
  • Perform sponge and sharp counts with the circulating nurse.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization.
  • Support specialty surgical services and stock OR rooms as needed.
  • Prepare sterile dressings and assist with post-operative care.
  • Orient new staff and contribute to unit goals.
  • May handle medications, sharps, and syringes on the sterile field.

Education

Graduate from accredited school of practical nursing
Grandfathering Clause evidence of 1 year of surgical technologist employment (2010-2014)

Rochester, NY 14626Hours Per Week: Per DiemSchedule: Day, Evening, NightSUMMARY:The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role as a key member of the surgical team, serving as the primary scrub technologist during procedures. This individual is responsible for preparing, organizing, and managing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment to ensure efficient and safe operations. The Surgical Technologist maintains strict adherence to sterile techniques and demonstrates continuous attention to preserving the integrity of the sterile field throughout each procedure.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Maintain a minimum of 15 Continuing Medical Education hours annually.Prepare and check instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.Set up and maintain a sterile field, following strict aseptic techniques.Assist with patient draping and ensure the surgical team is properly attired.Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.Perform accurate sponge and sharp counts with the circulating nurse.Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization.Support specialty surgical services and stock OR rooms as needed.Prepare sterile dressings and assist with post-operative care.Help orient new staff and contribute to unit goals and objectives.May handle medications, sharps, and syringes on the sterile field.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:Graduated from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 12 months of graduation.Graduated from an accredited school of practical nursing.Qualify under the \"Grandfathering Clause\" by providing proof of at least one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between December 31, 2010, and December 31, 2014.Qualify under the \"Hard-to-Fill Clause\" by graduating from an accredited program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 24 months of hire.New Graduates:• Official transcript from accredited school or letter emailed directly from the school’s registrar’s office confirming program completion will be accepted upon graduation.• Primary source education verification required within 90 days of start date.EDUCATION:LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Heavy - Clinical - Heavy clinical roles require continual lifting of more than 50 lbs., pushing and pulling patients or equipment, and working in physically awkward or restrictive positions. Staff must maintain balance and coordination in confined, uneven, or emergent care settings while performing both fine and gross motor tasks. High sensory acuity is needed to recognize patient cues and environmental alerts. Emotional and cognitive demands are significant due to urgent decision-making, managing distressed patients, and functioning effectively in high-pressure clinical situations. Environmental exposures commonly include infectious agents, biohazards, noise, and chemicals. Employees may be required to complete mask-fit testing, TB screening, and participate in extended or on-call shifts.For disease specific care programs refer to the program specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements.Any physical requirements reported by a prospective employee and/or employee’s physician or delegate will be considered for accommodations.PAY RANGE:$28.05 - $34.17CITY:RochesterPOSTAL CODE:14626The posted pay range is a good faith representation of potential base pay for this position. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates could vary based on position details and FTE.
