Job summary

Brown University Health seeks a support technician for Surgical Services. Under supervision, you transport patients to the operating room, deliver supplies, assist in preoperative scrubs, and help position and move patients, while also preparing equipment for sterilization.

Responsibilities

• Routinely inventories, requisitions, and stocks supplies in allocated areas to meet needs.
• Picks up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from hospital areas; delivers cultures and specimens as appropriate.
• Assists in general cleaning and maintenance of Operating Room; cleans and prepares equipment for sterilization.
• Assembles patient record packs of charge slips for specific procedures.

Such activities include, but is not limited to, transporting patients to and from Operating Room; picking up and/or delivering supplies, materials, specimens, cultures and the like. Assists in preoperative scrubs; assists in lifting, positioning and supporting patients. Cleans and prepares equipment utilized in surgical procedures; prepares material for sterilization. Assists in cleaning and maintaining the operating rooms. Assembles charge form packets.

Responsibilities

• Transports patients to and from the surgical suite.

• Assists in surgical room preparation by ensuring basic supplies are available such as blankets, solutions, and syringes.
• Cleans furniture and equipment between cases.
• Obtains necessary supplies and equipment required for specific procedure.Assists in prepping patients for surgery; assists with preoperative scrubs; lifts and moves and positions patients, supports and holds patients for spinal anesthesia injection and the like.
• Routinely inventories, requisitions, receives and stocks supplies in established areas, including sterile linen, instruments, scrub clothes and the like in order to ensure availability to meet anticipated needs.
• Picks up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from various areas of the Hospital such as pharmaceuticals, blood and plasma, as well as routine supplies required by the department.
• Delivers cultures and surgery specimens to designated areas of the Hospital for analysis as appropriate.
• Assists in general cleaning and maintenance of the Operating Room such as washing equipment, sorting and stocking supplies, cleaning room, washing stretchers and changing light bulbs and the like.
• Cleans, dries, packages and seals a variety of supplies and material to be sterilized, such as washing, assembling and wrapping basin sets for sterilization.
• Occasionally operates steam/water pressure sterilizers in order to clean and sterilize items.
• Assembles patient record packs of charge slips, appropriate for specific surgical procedure, to be completed by others.

Minimum Qualifications

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to recognized changes in patient's condition and report such to nursing personnel.
• Ability to perform simple numerical calculations in order to calculate and requisition supplies.
• Knowledge of aseptic techniques in order to ensure proper cleaning of rooms, equipment and materials.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
• Ability to read, write and understand English, with ability to perform simple numerical calculations.

EXPERIENCE:One to three months’ on-the-job training and experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Physical abilities to transport patients throughout the Hospital, to assist in lifting and positioning patients and to clean and set up equipment.Works in the Operating Room area and is exposed to odors, bodily fluids, etc. when assisting with patients. Required to work for extended periods in standing position when assisting with preoperative procedures.Some exposure to chemical fumes and infectious disease when cleaning equipment and rooms.Frequent standing, walking, lifting and carrying in order to clean equipment and replenish supplies, transport patients and materials and stock areas.Hazards of injury are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.

Pay Range

$21.76-$22.75
