Job summary

RIH Rhode Island Hospital is looking for an individual to perform non-medical duties in support of Surgical Services. This role requires transporting patients, preparing surgical rooms, and assisting in sterilization processes among various tasks.

The ideal candidate will have a High School Diploma or GED, along with basic skills related to patient care in a high-pressure environment. The position offers a pay range of $21.76–$22.75 and operates Monday through Friday, with an evening shift from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM.

Job description

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, but according to established policies and procedures, performs a variety of non‑medical duties in support of Surgical Services. Activities include transporting patients to and from the Operating Room, picking up and delivering supplies, materials, specimens, cultures and the like; assisting in pre‑operative scrubs; assisting in lifting, positioning and supporting patients; cleaning and preparing equipment used in surgical procedures; preparing material for sterilization; cleaning and maintaining operating rooms; and assembling charge form packets. RESPONSIBILITIES

• Transport patients to and from the surgical suite.
• Review pre‑operative patient charts to ensure all forms are signed and tests are completed; inform nursing personnel of any discrepancies.
• Assist in surgical room preparation by ensuring basic supplies (blankets, solutions, syringes) are available.
• Clean furniture and equipment between cases.
• Obtain necessary supplies and equipment required for specific procedures.
• Assist in pre‑operative scrubs, lifting, moving and positioning patients, and support patients for spinal anesthesia injections.
• Inventory, requisition, receive and stock supplies (sterile linen, instruments, scrub clothes, etc.) to meet anticipated needs.
• Pick up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from various hospital areas (pharmaceuticals, blood, plasma, routine supplies).
• Deliver cultures and surgical specimens to designated analysis areas.
• Assist in general cleaning and maintenance of the Operating Room, including washing equipment, sorting and stocking supplies, cleaning rooms, washing stretchers, and changing light bulbs.
• Clean, dry, package and seal supplies and material for sterilization, such as washing, assembling and wrapping basin sets.
• Occasionally operate steam/water pressure sterilizers to clean and sterilize items.
• Assemble patient record packs of charge slips appropriate for specific surgical procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Basic Knowledge. High School Diploma or GED preferred; ability to recognize changes in a patient’s condition and report them to nursing personnel; ability to perform simple numerical calculations for requisitioning supplies; knowledge of aseptic techniques; demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns; ability to read, write and understand English.
• Experience. One to three months of on‑the‑job training and experience.
• Physical Requirements. Ability to transport patients, lift and position patients, clean and set up equipment; work in the Operating Room area exposed to odors, bodily fluids, and chemical fumes; stand, walk, lift and carry frequently for extended periods; hazards minimized by adherence to safety precautions.

Work Environment: Operating Room area with exposure to odors, bodily fluids, chemical fumes and infectious disease. Pay Range: $21.76–$22.75. Location: Rhode Island Hospital – 593 Eddy Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903.
