Provides general and specialized eye care to patients within the full scope of Optometric practice. Works with Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Ophthalmic Residents, and other healthcare providers as a collaborative care provider in the co-management of patient care that affects eye health and vision.

Job Description:
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provides optometric evaluations with referral to an Ophthalmologist as necessary. Performs comprehensive eye exams, reviews patient's history, selects and administers specialized tests and measurements, and administers non-medical/surgical treatments. Designs and implements individual treatment programs and selects and applies corrective/therapeutic devices. (essential)
  • Provides emergency and triage ophthalmic care to patients, referring patients to an Ophthalmologist when specialized care is needed. Records evaluations, diagnoses, and treatments in patient medical records. (essential)
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the unit quality improvement program. Assists in maintaining a safe and efficient examination and technical environment. (essential)
  • Provides patient support and education. Participates in interdisciplinary education programs and provides clinical precepting for new staff, students, Residents, and others. Engages in peer review processes to improve practice quality. (essential)
  • Provides leadership supporting hospital and departmental policies and goals, influencing change in healthcare delivery. Interprets healthcare issues for staff, patients, and the community. Proposes and implements strategies to advance Optometric practice. (essential)
Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Optometry required.
  • License as an Optometrist required.
  • 0-1 years related work experience required.
  • Completion of an accredited Optometry training program.
  • Current licensure for the State of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Controlled Substance license for prescribing pharmaceuticals.
  • Experience with computer systems, including web-based applications and Microsoft Office suite. (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Residency/fellowship in Optometric practice; 3-5 years in practice.

Social/Environmental and Physical Requirements:

Requires close attention to detail, adaptability, and use of independent judgment. Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, infectious diseases, and bloodborne pathogens. Physical activity includes sitting, walking, standing, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
