Responsibilities
- Provide optical dispensing services and point-of-sale support related to eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other merchandise using the electronic records system.
- Maintain a cost-effective, attractive retail environment that supports selling quality products.
- Provide routine and urgent clinical care to maintain ocular health and patient well-being.
- Perform triage and scheduling of patients, assist optometrists in preliminary testing, visual field testing, digital photography, and triage phone calls and messages with appropriate documentation in the electronic record.
- Manage automated appointment scheduling and other tests as needed under general direction and supervision from the Eye Care Center Manager; optometrists provide direction and guidance to the technician.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree from an accredited Optometric Technician/Assistant program, or equivalent training.
- Certification preferred but not required: ABO NCLE or CPOT/CPOA, or JCAHPO COA/COT, or equivalent.
- Possession or eligibility for a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate; certification required within four months of employment.
- Ability to verify prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses.
- Proficiency in knowledge about new lens and frame products and ability to communicate this information to patients.
- Proficiency in frame styling, adjusting, repairing, and assembling eyewear.
- Ability to enter all contact and eyeglasses orders and billing information in the Eye Care Center software.
- Ability to instruct patients on handling and use of contact lenses; ability to verify and polish contact lenses.
- Ability to perform routine patient testing (acuities, tonometry, visual fields) and other procedures as directed by the Optical Supervisor or the Optometrist.
- Ability to perform clinical procedures related to vision and ocular health evaluation and assist in ocular first-aid administration.
- Ability to perform all optometric pre-screening tests and enter data into an electronic medical record.
- Ability to perform automated visual field testing and retinal photography.
- Good oral and written communication skills; excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to be culturally sensitive and work with diverse patients.
- Ability to handle and triage patient inquiries regarding appointments, eyeglasses, and contact lenses and document appropriately in the medical record and Eye Care Center software.
- Maintain patient confidentiality; knowledge of HIPAA requirements.
- Knowledge of medical records or ability to learn documentation requirements; familiarity with MS Office, electronic medical record systems, and scheduling applications.
- Experience with EPIC is desirable.
- Physical ability to lift up to 15 pounds; capacity to sit or stand for extended periods; ability to use CRT extensively; ability to work cooperatively with coworkers and the public; some flexible hours may be required.
