Job summary

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking an Optometric Specialist to manage a high volume of contact lens cases and professional eyewear dispensing. This role leads the consolidation of contact lens and optical services into a single unit and reports to the Optical Manager.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma and three years of related experience.
• ABO/NCLE/COA certification or willingness to obtain within one year of hire.
• Experience with ophthalmic optics, dispensing and patient counseling.
• Proficiency with EHR and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and basic anatomy/physiology preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee full lifecycle of contact lens and eyewear orders; coordinate after-hours programs.
• Assist patients in selecting and ordering eyewear during a transition to a unified dispensing unit.
• Manage medically necessary contact lens cases and prior authorizations.
• Lead onboarding and clinical training of optometry student interns.
• Prepare, submit and post optical insurance claims in the EHR; monitor reimbursements.
