General Summary Of Duties

The Optometric Assistant/Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for providing direct patient care and performing administrative duties in the Eye Clinic Department. This is a union position.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs pretesting requirements for the eye doctor, including tests like visual acuity, color vision, visual fields, extraocular movements, pupillary reactions, stereopsis, binocular function, lensometry, autorefraction, and vision therapy.
  2. Performs ancillary testing as ordered by the eye doctor, such as fundus photos, visual fields, OCT, pachymetry, topography, meibomography, pupilography, blood pressure, and tonometry.
  3. Answers and returns patient phone calls.
  4. Updates and manages medication logs, temperature logs, and maintenance logs.
  5. Schedules appointments and makes reminder calls.
  6. Manages inventories and orders supplies for the Eye Department.
  7. Assists with prior authorizations for medications and glasses.
  8. Helps with insurance questions or eligibility.
  9. Manages patient flow in the Eye Clinic.
  10. Completes patient care documents promptly.
  11. Performs miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the Eye Clinic Director.
  12. Participates in community vision screenings and outreach programs.
  13. Attends continuing education events for Optometric Assistants and maintains current certification.
  14. Applies aseptic techniques and follows safety procedures and incident protocols.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, And Competencies

  1. Background in medical/science-related field and knowledge of optometry/ophthalmology terminology.
  2. Experience in a healthcare setting.
  3. CPO certification or ability to obtain it within one year of employment.
  4. Experience working with diverse populations.
  5. Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  6. Flexibility to adapt to scheduling changes.
  7. Teamwork skills within the eye department and larger clinic.
  8. Excellent customer service skills.
  9. Multitasking ability with attention to detail.

Highly desirable competencies include:

  1. Optometric Assistant certification (CPO, CPOA, or CPOT).
  2. Fluency in Spanish.
  3. Experience in eye care settings.
  4. Experience with diverse populations or FQHCs.
