Job summary

Great Lakes Bay Health Centers is seeking an eye care support professional to join our optical services. The role involves assisting patients with eyewear choices, taking precise lens measurements, dispensing and repairing eyewear, and maintaining patient charts.

The candidate should have a high school diploma, active BLS certification, and preferably optical experience. Bilingual ability is a plus. This is a full-time, on-site position with no telecommuting option.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with eyewear selections and ensure prescriptions, comfort, and insurance coverage.
• Measure lens parameters including pupillary distance, base curve, optical centers, and multifocal data.
• Dispense and repair eyewear and explain usage and cleaning instructions to patients.
• Maintain medical charts per policy and protocols.
• Assist with optical supplies inventory and order glasses through GLBHC lens lab and external labs.
• Ensure orders meet ANSI standards and contact patients for pickup within an appropriate timeframe.
• Verify insurance eligibility, interpret authorizations, collect patient payments per policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

• Patient Assistance: Assist patients with eye wear selections. Ensure frame and lens options agree the patient’s prescription, comfort, and insurance coverage.
• Lens Parameter Measurements: Accurately measure pupillary distance, base curve, optical centers, and multi-focal measurements to ensure prescription accuracy.
• Dispensing/Repairs: Adjust and dispense eyewear. Effectively explain to patients the proper usage and cleaning instructions of their frames/lenses/contacts. Perform frame repairs as necessary.
• Charting: Ensures that medical records/charts are maintained in accordance with proper policy and protocols.
• Inventory/Orders: Assist with inventory of optical supplies and re-stocking as needed. Orders and receives glasses through GLBHC lens lab and external labs according to set guidelines.
• Quality: Ensure orders received are within ANSI standards and contacts patient for available pick-up within an appropriate timeframe.
• Collections: Verify insurance eligibility as needed for services and materials. Interpret authorizations to accurately determine patient fees and copays. Collect payment from patients in accordance to GLBHC policy.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

• Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
• Licensure: Active BLS certification required. Pursuit of board certification preferred.
• Experience: Optical experience preferred. A combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties with additional on-site training as needed. Bilingual preferred.
• Skills: Ability to type with speed and accuracy. Must possess computer skills and knowledge of other office equipment. Able to communicate, verbally and in writing, to a diverse population. Must possess problem solving skills.
• Interpersonal Skills: Excellent organizational skills. Ability to understand and apply the GLBHC mission and ethics daily. Strong commitment to customer service.
• Physical Effort: Must be able to sit, stand, and or walk for an entire workday. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and or twist while holding up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
• Hours of Work: Full-time; flexible and varied. Regular and timely attendance required. Telecommuting not an option for this position.
• Travel: Not a requirement for this position. If needed, reimbursement for expenses consistent with GLBHC policy.
