Job summary

National Grid is seeking an Optel and Metering Technician for a peripatetic role covering the Central Zone with a hybrid working model. A company vehicle is provided to support travel to substations within the region and beyond.

You will install, test and maintain telecoms/ICT, LAN/WAN, metering, and telephony systems, lead project activities, and ensure safe, compliant delivery aligned with National Grid standards.

Optel and Metering Technician – Central Regional Team

As an Optel and Metering Technician you will support the delivery of telecommunications projects across National Grid’s transmission network. You will carry out installations, end-to-end testing, fault diagnosis and rectification, and deployment of additional/ new telecoms services to help ensure the safe and reliable operation of the electricity transmission network. This is a peripatetic role, requiring travel to substations within the region and beyond to support ongoing work.

This role isperipatetic across the Central Zone, covering Warwick and the wider Midlands region, with a hybrid approach to working. A company vehicle will be provided as part of the role to support travel requirements. We are also happy to discuss any additional flexibility or working arrangements that could help make this opportunity work for you.

What You’ll Do:

• Support the delivery of telecoms and ICT projects, including the installation and commissioning of replacement Operational Telecoms (OpTel) network infrastructure.
• Undertake Project Lead and Authorised Person responsibilities, ensuring activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with National Grid standards.
• Install, test, and maintain Telecoms/ICT, LAN/WAN, metering, and telephony systems across the network.
• Carry out optical and electrical cabling works to support new installations, upgrades, and network enhancements.
• Respond to OpTel emergencies, providing fault finding, diagnostics, and resolution to minimise operational disruption.
• Coordinate the procurement and supply of equipment, spares, and materials to support ongoing project and maintenance activities.
• Help deliver reliable and responsive services in line with Service Level Agreement commitments and stakeholder expectations.

What You’ll Have:

• Strong understanding of the technical elements of Telecommunications / ICT systems
• IT Advanced Skills and application to enable a self-reliance approach to common work related problems and Telecom system issues
• Understanding and practical application of LV systems and low voltage skills associated with the installation and ongoing operation of Telecom/ICT systems
• Experience working on fibre and copper cabling systems
• Demonstrated adherence to defined safety processes and procedures
• Effective planning, communication and supervisory skills to lead a working party to efficiently deliver work to challenging timescales
• STEM GCSE (Minimum Grade C) or equivalent operational telecoms engineering experience
