Hampton Roads Transit is seeking a Payroll Technician to join our team in Virginia. The role involves processing attendance, leave and operator payroll, and entering data into HASTUS and Workday systems to ensure accurate compensation.
The position requires 1 year of payroll or related experience, a high school diploma or GED, and the ability to work with electronic records in a public transit environment. Excellent detail orientation and communication skills are essential.

Hourly rate: $19.91 - $24.88
The Payroll Technician receives limited supervision from the Sr. Manager of Bus Transportation or Manager of Bus Transportation. Abnormal hours and/or spilt shifts may be required; must work outside regular service and business hours as required. Considerable knowledge of the service area, routes and of types of equipment. Considerable knowledge of HRT policies and procedures, rules and regulations affecting transit operation. Knowledge of union contract provisions affecting operator’s hours, pay and benefits. Ability to work independently. Ability to concentrate for long periods of time. Detail oriented. Efficient in following routines & procedures. Ability to speak clearly and concisely, to understand views and concerns of others, to solve operator problems and to take effective action. Ability to enter, correct and retrieve data using spreadsheets and word-processing software. Ability to use independent judgment and initiative in accordance with the accepted policies and procedures when faced with difficult or emergency situations. Ability to work in HASTUS and Workday module with minimum supervision. Knowledge of the Drug and Alcohol Policy and regulations.
Proficiency in using computer systems and the listed software applications associated with performance of assigned work is essential. Basic problem-solving skills associated with software applications used is expected. Software usage relevant to job duties will be evaluated.
MS Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, HASTUS, Workday; proficient in HASTUS and Workday is required.
Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect oneself, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures and policies. Take an active part in reporting unsafe conditions and any hazards within the workplace to their Supervisor, Manager and/or the Safety Department.
Graduation from high school or GED
1 year of experience in payroll, accounting or closely related work. 1 year of transit experience and/or equivalent experience and education required.
Possess a valid Driver’s License. Acquire a Virginia Driver’s License within 60 days after the date of hire (in instances when an out of state license is not the applicant’s current state of residence).
