Job summary

Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (FSDB) in St. Augustine seeks an OPS Instructional Assistant - Communication Support to provide direct ASL-based communication support for low-vision students and to facilitate interactions among students, teachers, peers, and staff.

The role requires completing 60 college hours (or a relevant degree or ParaPro with score 464+), with salary at $15.00 per hour. You will support instruction, ensure student access, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team

Qualifications

  • Completion of 60 college semester hours from an accredited institution; or Associate of Arts Degree or higher; or high school diploma and a score of 464 or higher on the Para Pro Assessment.
  • Proof of education provided at time of interview.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct communication support to low vision students through ASL.
  • Facilitate communication between student, teachers, peers and staff.
  • Assist students in accessing classroom instruction, discussions, assignments, activities and events.
  • Maintain proximity to students to ensure access to communication throughout the day.
  • Collaborate with teachers and service providers to support student success.
  • Monitor student understanding and communication needs; provide feedback to staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality per district policies and federal regulations.
  • Maintain records and documentation as required by the school district.
  • Proficiency in ASL and strong interpersonal communication.
  • Knowledge of deaf and hard-of-hearing educational needs.
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Adhere to confidentiality and special education procedures.
  • Ability to foster student independence and self-advocacy.
  • Complete CPI and CPR training as required.

WORK LOCATION: Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, 207 San Marco Ave, St. Augustine, Florida 32084

WORK HOURS: Schedule Varies; As needed

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direct communication support to low vision students through the use of American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Facilitate communication between the student, teachers, peers, and school personnel while promoting the student's independence and self-advocacy skills.
  • Assist students in accessing classroom instruction, discussions, assignments, activities, and school-related events.
  • Maintain close proximity to the student to ensure consistent access to communication throughout the instructional day.
  • Collaborate with teachers and related service providers to support student success.
  • Monitor student understanding and communication needs and provide feedback to appropriate staff regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information in compliance with district policies and federal regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation as required by the school district.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of deaf and hard-of-hearing educational needs
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Understanding of confidentiality requirements and special education procedures
  • Ability to foster student independence and self-advocacy
  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI);
  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR;
