Job summary

StevenDouglas is partnering with a growth-oriented commercial real estate firm to hire an Operations Accounting Manager. You will own property accounting for a regional portfolio and lead a team of accounting professionals, ensuring timely monthly, quarterly, and annual closes and accurate reporting.

You will review journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analyses, drive process improvements and automation, and partner with Corporate Reporting, Tax, FP&A, Legal, and Operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • Experience running month-end and quarter-end close cycles in a fast-paced organization.
  • Strong background in financial reporting, reconciliations, accruals, and budgeting/forecasting.
  • Ability to translate financial data into actionable insights for leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Drive monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and underlying analyses.
  • Lead variance analysis and translate narratives for leadership.
  • Prepare and vet supporting schedules for ongoing reporting obligations.
  • Oversee day-to-day team workflows: lease interpretation, balance sheet reconciliations, budgeting, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Manage portfolio-level operating expense recovery cycles, including budgets and true-ups.
  • Uphold internal controls and documentation standards.
  • Coach and develop direct reports and drive continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate across Finance, Tax, FP&A, Legal, and Operations to hit reporting deadlines.

The Opportunity

Our client is looking for an analytical, self-motivated accounting professional to step into the Operations Accounting Manager role. This person will take ownership of property accounting for a meaningful slice of the company's regional portfolio and will lead a collaborative team of accounting professionals. You'll be expected to assess current workflows, benchmark them against industry-leading practices, and bring forward practical recommendations to senior leadership. This role reports directly to the senior financial leadership team.

What You'll Own

  • Drive the monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles, keeping accuracy and timeliness front and center.
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and the underlying financial analyses.
  • Lead fluctuation analysis on financial statements and translate the variance narrative for leadership.
  • Prepare and vet supporting schedules tied to ongoing reporting obligations.
  • Oversee day-to-day team workflows, including lease interpretation, property-level variance reviews, balance sheet reconciliations, budget/forecast coordination, and partnership with corporate reporting teams.
  • Manage portfolio-level operating expense recovery cycles (budgets, true-ups, and annual reconciliations) using industry-standard accounting systems.
  • Uphold company policy, internal controls, and documentation standards.
  • Act as a go-to financial resource for both operational and corporate partners.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop direct reports, keeping an eye on individual growth and team performance.
  • Build a culture centered on accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Work cross-functional partnerships across Finance, Tax, FP&A, Legal, Operations, and executive leadership.
  • Keep internal and external stakeholders aligned to hit critical reporting deadlines.

Process & Systems

  • Continuously evaluate accounting systems and reporting tools to scale and streamline operations.
  • Standardize workflows and roll out best practices across the broader accounting function.
  • Build and maintain comprehensive documentation for policies and procedures.
  • Jump into special projects and system implementations as they arise.

What You'll Need

  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA is preferred
  • Roughly 3–5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, with some prior supervisory or team-lead exposure.
  • Solid, working command of U.S. GAAP.
  • A track record of running month-end and quarter-end close cycles in a fast-paced, complex organization.
  • Hands-on background in financial reporting, reconciliations, accruals, variance analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • The ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable takeaways for leadership.
  • Experience driving process improvements automation, systems upgrades, or efficiency initiatives that strengthen accuracy and internal controls.
  • Sharp organizational instincts and comfort juggling competing deadlines.
  • A genuine passion for developing people, with prior success building strong teams.
  • Confident communication skills to build cross-functional relationships across departments and seniority levels.
  • Comfort working within enterprise resource planning (ERP) and standard property accounting technology platforms.
  • Background in commercial real estate, property accounting, or lease accounting is a strong plus.
