Job summary

Rochester Regional Health's Reed Eye in Pittsford seeks an Ophthalmology Tech III to join our Optical department. The role requires advanced ophthalmic knowledge, patient care, and ability to perform diagnostic testing and imaging with strong clinical judgment.

Responsibilities include equipment maintenance, training staff, assisting physicians across subspecialties, and supporting contact lens services. A COA/COT certification and at least 4 years of experience are required.

• JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.

• Understand and manage subspecialty contact lenses offerings.
• Responsible for contact lens ordering.
• Perform other duties assigned.

Job Title: Ophthalmology Tech III

Summary:

Requires a high degree of skill and knowledge of ophthalmic practice and all subspecialties. Possesses an excellent understanding of ocular pharmacology and knowledge of medications used in office and those prescribed to patients for treatment of ocular diseases. Provides intermediate to advanced diagnostic testing and imaging. Possesses excellent critical thinking skills and excellent patient care. Ability to communicate with patients, co-workers, and supervisor is critical.

• Responsible for equipment maintenance and quality control.

• Helps prepare technicians for certification tests: COA, COT, and OCT-C
• Well-versed in all Ophthalmic sub-specialties
• Required to assist physicians in all sub- specialties
• Possess a good understanding of the different specialty contact lenses offered across all ophthalmology practices
• Responsible for contact lens ordering
• Perform other duties assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Light - Clinical - Light clinical roles involve frequent standing and walking, with occasional lifting of light objects (≤20 lbs.) and routine reaching, grasping, and fine manipulation for tasks such as patient care, laboratory work, or specimen processing. Staff rely on strong visual and auditory acuity to accurately observe specimens, read instrumentation, monitor patients, respond to alarms, and communicate effectively with care teams. Cognitive demands include multitasking, prioritizing clinical and laboratory workflows, and coordinating with interdisciplinary teams. Emotional resilience is necessary due to frequent interruptions, shifting priorities, and the need for precise and compassionate interaction with patients and colleagues. Environmental exposures may include infectious materials, biological specimens, cleaning agents, sharps, chemical reagents, and wet surfaces. PPE use, TB testing, and schedule flexibility are commonly required.
