Job summary

iCare Health Solutions, a VSP Vision company, seeks an ophthalmic technician to support daily patient care flow, collect data for physicians, and assist with exams. You will document measurements (vision acuity, refraction, tonometry) and help maintain equipment.

Candidates should have COA or COT preferred and at least 2 years of experience; strong communication, organization, and confidentiality are essential; willingness to travel daily and work in a fast-paced Fort Lauderdale clinic.

Qualifications

  • COA or COT preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of ophthalmic technician or surgical assistant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Acquaint all new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed.
  • Obtain patient history including chief complaint, medical history, and allergies for physicians.
  • Performs accurate documentation and measurement tasks: vision acuity, lensometry, entrance tests, tonometry, refraction, slit lamp exam, dilation.
  • Manage patient flow efficiently to minimize wait times.
  • Maintain and clean equipment; adhere to infection control and safety standards.
  • Maintain utmost patient confidentiality.
  • Other duties assigned.

Responsible for daily patient care flow. Performs a number of data collection functions as delegated by the physician and/or Clinic Manager to allow for proper professional diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients’ condition(s).

Responsible for daily patient care flow. Performs a number of data collection functions as delegated by the physician and/or Clinic Manager to allow for proper professional diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients’ condition(s).

Essential Functions
  • Acquaint all new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed
  • Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, medical history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications to provide accurate information to Ophthalmologists
  • Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks for new and follow-up patients: Vision acuity, lensometry, entrance tests, contact and non-contact tonometry, refraction, slit lamp exam, angle assessment, and dilation
  • Manage patient flow efficiently, ensuring minimal wait times and a smooth patient experience
  • Maintains and cleans all equipment being used and adheres to strict infection control protocols and safety standards
  • Maintains utmost patient confidentiality

Job Specifications

  • Typically has the following skills or abilities:
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Technician (COT) preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an ophthalmic technician or surgical assistant
  • Strong knowledge of ophthalmic instruments, procedures, and terminology
  • Familiarity with EMR systems (experience with NextGen is a plus)
  • Excellent organizational skills and diligence
  • Ability to travel daily
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with patients, colleagues, and health care professionals
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in documentation

  • For roles that are remote (i.e., Work From Home (WFM)) or hybrid (i.e., partial onsite at a VSP location and WFM), must demonstrate a high level of engagement in virtual environments, including maintaining camera presence during meetings to support effective communication and team alignment
