Job summary

EyeSouth Partners' Retina Institute of Illinois is seeking a skilled ophthalmic technician to support physicians by collecting data and performing tests.

You will document findings in the EMR, assist with patient education, administer medications, and maintain exam rooms, contributing to a fast-paced clinical environment.

Qualifications include HS diploma, COA eligible preferred, and experience with Nextech/ICP is valued.

Qualifications

• History taking including pharmacology understanding for ophthalmic medications

• Conduction of standard ophthalmic tests per doctor’s orders

Responsibilities

• Review patient charts for completeness and accuracy
• Perform tests ordered by doctor and scheduled exam
• Act as medical scribe and enter data into EMR
• Take ocular and systemic history and document visual acuity
• Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under physician direction
• Assist with in-office procedures and obtain informed consent
• Educate patients and maintain exam room cleanliness
• Comply with procedures and regulations and document quality reporting requirements
• Participate in team meetings and assist with supply management

Job description

At Retina Institute of Illinois, we believe in providing compassionate and conscientious retinal care to our patients, with the goal of improving eyesight and preventing loss of vision.

Established over 15 years ago, the Retina Institute of Illinois has been providing outstanding retinal care to the Chicago-land area and surrounding suburbs.

Responsible for assisting the ophthalmologist and optometrists by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s ocular health status. The ophthalmic technician is proficient in performing appropriate clinical tests, drawing on formal education and/or clinical experience that provide a solid understanding of the theory and principles of eye care.

Clinical

• Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
• Perform testing ordered by doctor and determined by the type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and/or patient history.
• Ability to act as a medical scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records.
• Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
• Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
• Ability to assist with simple in-office procedures ensures proper informed consent is obtained.
• Assists with patient education.
• Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
• Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
• Understands documentation requirements for quality reporting and testing frequency restrictions.

Administrative

• Report inventory and supply needs to leadership timely and as needed for supply ordering.
• Participate in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings as planned and required.
• Complete work/school excuses and provide patients with medication instructions.
• Understand and accept responsibility for reporting potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
• Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
• Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

Essential Skills

Intermediate comprehension and ability to complete each skill as required based on iJCAHPO training and generally accepted understanding of each technician skill. Intermediate comprehension means applying knowledge correctly in routine and moderately complex situations, understanding core clinical concepts and workflows, and the ability to interpret information rather than just follow instructions.

• History Taking (including pharmacology understanding for common ophthalmic medications)
• Visual Acuity
• Confrontation Visual Fields
• Extraocular Motility Assessment evaluation of ductions, perform cover/uncover & alternating cover testing and document defects
• Pupil Assessment recognize and identify pupil abnormalities in addition to an APD
• Intraocular Pressure Measurement with Goldmann applanation via slit lamp or Perkins tonometer
• Manual Lensometry and accurate transposition between minus and plus cylinder as needed
• Angle Assessment utilizing the slit lamp microscope
• Manual refractometry using the Jackson Cross-Cylinder technique
• Supplemental testing including Amsler Grid, Color Vision, Stereopsis (Randot test), Exophthalmometry, BAT, and PAM

Diagnostic testing including immersion and/or contact A-scan biometry, ultrasound, OCT, visual field, pachymetry, topography, dry eye testing, and fundus photography

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 3 years’ experience as uncertified ophthalmic assistant preferred
• COA Eligibility preferred
• Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
