Job summary

Boston Medical Center seeks an Ophthalmic Technician I to assist ophthalmologists by collecting data on patients’ visual status and by performing essential tests such as Visual Acuity, Visual Field, Lensometry, and Automated Refraction. The role includes eye drop instillation and external eye examinations, with responsibilities to organize work efficiently.

The position is full-time in the BMC Eye Clinics, requiring at least a high school diploma and 1+ years in ophthalmic patient care;

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Preferably 1–2 years education beyond high school in an allied health program (preferred).
  • At least 1 year experience as Ophthalmology Assistant/Technician with history taking and acuity testing.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Willing to work toward COA certification within 12 months.

Responsibilities

  • Assist ophthalmologist by gathering data on patient’s visual status.
  • Perform ophthalmic tests: Visual Acuity, Visual Field, Lensometry, Automated Refraction, Pupil assessment, external exam, eye drops.
  • Organize and prioritize work to ensure timely completion.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision of the department supervisors, the Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for assisting the ophthalmologist by gathering data pertaining to the patient's visual status and maintaining an environment conductive to the delivery of efficient, quality patient care. The Ophthalmic Technician is able to effectively perform appropriate clinical testings such as Visual Acuity Testing, Visual Field Testing, Lensometry, Automated Refractometry, Pupil Assessment; Gross External Examination and eye drop instillation. Responsibilities also include organizing and prioritizing work to ensure completion in a timely manner. Position: Ophthalmic Technician I Department: BMC Eye Clinics Schedule: Full Time

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Preferably one to two years education beyond high school (graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant, Ophthalmic Medical Technology, Ophthalmic Assistant, or Allied Health Professional program or equivalent preferred).
  • Experience: At least 1 year of previous experience working as an Ophthalmology Assistant or Technician. Experience must include: history taking, ophthalmic patient services, general medical knowledge, and visual acuity testing.
  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Requires the analytical ability to understand and apply complex and semi-complex ophthalmic procedures and follow detailed instructions from the Ophthalmologist.
  • Effective interpersonal skills necessary to relate to patients in a sympathetic and tactful manner and allay patient apprehensions.
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
  • Optimistic attitude, strong customer service focus, and willing to work as a contributing member of a team.
  • Requires knowledge of the Department's policies, procedures and protocols normally acquired through on the job training.
  • No certification required; however, must be willing to work toward certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COA) and be eligible to take exam within 12 months of hire.

COMPENSATION

Compensation Range: $23.28- $29.53 This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer.
