Summary

Perform a wide range of data collection tasks to assist in the diagnosis of the patient’s condition. Demonstrate professional-level ophthalmic assistant skills.

Provide chairside assistance and administer treatment as ordered by the physician. Prepare examination rooms, escort patients, and ready them for the physician. Perform a wide range of data collection tasks to assist in the diagnosis of the patient’s condition. Demonstrate professional-level ophthalmic assistant skills.

Responsibilities

  • Communication, Patient Care & Clinic Duties
  • Welcome new patients and explain procedures clearly.
  • Educate patients on medications and at-home vision checks (e.g., Amsler grid).
  • Accurately document medical information in patient records.
  • Obtain complete patient history: chief complaint, HPI, past and family history (ocular/general), allergies, and medications.
  • Perform clinical tests including:
    • Visual acuity, visual field testing
    • Tonometry, topography, auto refraction
    • Pachymetry, Schirmer tear test
    • Color vision and stereo tests
    • Keratometry, OCT, manifest refractions
  • Operate lensometer and clean eyeglasses.
  • Print prescriptions for glasses and medications electronically.
  • Dilate pupils based on exam type or physician's instructions.
  • Assist in office-based surgical procedures, including room preparation and cleanup.
  • Maintain clean, stocked examination rooms.
  • Respond to patient inquiries (phone and email).
  • Act as a medical scribe after appropriate training.
  • Patient Flow Management
  • Prioritize and escort patients from the waiting area for testing.
  • Ensure smooth transitions and patient comfort throughout their visit.
  • Collaborate with team members to optimize scheduling and reduce wait times.
  • Administrative Tasks
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot equipment; report issues to the manager.
  • Return pharmacy and patient calls; document interactions in EHR.
  • Assist with appointment scheduling when needed.
  • Perform other administrative or clinical tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Prior experience as an ophthalmic technician or medical assistant preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in computer systems; minimum 45 WPM typing speed.
  • Ability to thrive in a structured, diverse workplace.
  • Empathy towards patients and co-workers.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and multitasking ability.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated respect and professionalism with patients and colleagues.
  • Leadership and mentorship skills for training new staff.


Travel Requirements

  • Travel to satellite offices may be required.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.


Physical Requirements

  • Light physical effort (able to lift/carry up to 25 lbs).
  • Occasional reaching, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Frequent and prolonged periods of standing, sitting, and walking.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and physical responsiveness required.
  • Extensive computer and telephone use.
