Job summary

Associated Retina Consultants is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to perform preliminary work-ups, assist physicians during exams, and document encounters in the EMR. You will conduct OCT, tonometry, visual acuity tests, Amsler grid, and more while maintaining equipment and supporting patient care.

Travel to other ARC locations may be required. The role emphasizes accurate testing, strong communication, and ability to work with diverse patients.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant / Medical Assistant / Ophthalmic Scribe Certification preferred or willing to obtain OSC within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English effectively.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse people; bilingual skills a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the doctor in patient care promptly and professionally.
  • Interview patients and document histories and testing.
  • Communicate follow-ups, surgeries, scheduling, and symptoms to patients.
  • Maintain and clean equipment; report irregularities to supervisor.
  • Instill eye drops and prepare exam rooms.
  • Travel to ARC locations as needed.
  • Perform OCT, tonometry with Perkins and Tonopen, visual acuity, Amsler grid testing, muscle testing, pupil exams, and visual field testing.

Position Overview

The Ophthalmic Technician uses ophthalmic techniques to perform the preliminary work‑up of patients, assists the physician(s) during the patient examination and documents the patient encounter in the patients’ electronic medical record as communicated by the physician.

Responsibilities
  • Promptly and professionally assists the doctor in patient care.
  • Efficiently and accurately interview patients and document histories and special testing.
  • Communicate with patients regarding follow‑up care, surgeries, procedures, changes in schedule, symptoms, surgery scheduling, etc.
  • Maintain and clean all equipment being used and report irregularities to the floor monitor or immediate supervisor.
  • Instill eye drops.
  • Clean and stock exam rooms as needed.
  • Check expiration dates on medications.
  • Reliably attend and arrive punctually as an essential function.
  • Accurately perform OCT, tonometry with Perkins and Tonopen, visual acuity, Amsler grid testing, muscle testing, pupil exams, confrontation visual field exam.
  • Attend staff meetings as required and reference minutes when absent.
  • Travel to other ARC locations as required.
Education Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Ophthalmic Scribe Certification, or willingness to obtain OSC within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to read, write and speak effectively in English.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse people.
  • Excellent communication, time‑management, and leadership skills.
  • Bilingual language skills a plus.
Preferred Experience
  • Six (6) months of progressively responsible outpatient or medical office experience demonstrating required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Willingness to train the preferred candidate.
Computer Skills
  • Good computer skills and ability to navigate between screens.
  • Accurately enter data.
  • Type 30 words per minute.
Travel Requirements

Traveling is required and may vary. Sitting in a bus for up to 2.5 hours at a time may be necessary.

Work Schedule

To be determined by the needs of the practice. Shifts may range between 8–14 hours. Saturday hours are required and may include early evening hours for the Phoenix office.

Physical Demands

Frequently stand, walk, sit, reach above shoulder, climb, crawl, and bend. Lift and carry 10–20 lbs. Push/pull 10–100 lbs. Occasionally squat or kneel. Lift and carry 20–50 lbs. (33–66% of the time on average).

Other Physical Requirements
  • Vision: near, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception.
  • Sense of hearing and hearing normal range of hearing and vision.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (gloves, face mask, eye shield, gown).
  • Possible exposure to staff or patients with communicable diseases and blood‑borne pathogens.
