Job summary

Whatcom Eye Surgeons is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join our clinical team. You will perform patient workups, document ocular examinations, and assist ophthalmologists with testing and procedures in a fast-paced setting.

We value thorough documentation, teamwork, and compassionate patient interaction. Training is provided for the right candidate and there is focus on excellent patient care and safety throughout all eye care services.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• One year of ophthalmic assistant experience preferred.
• Maintains appropriate education, certification, licensure, and training.
• Basic knowledge of medical coding terminology.
• Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office / G-Suite.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Open and close exam lanes and stock supplies.
• Coordinate patient flow to keep schedules on time.
• Maintain a clean, welcoming patient area.
• Complete consent forms and work releases.
• Take patient histories and perform ophthalmic exams.
• Operate ophthalmic equipment and sterilize tools.
• Instruct patients on eye care and treatment.
• Ensure medical records are accurate.
• Triage calls from patients and other contacts.
• Support other duties as needed.

Whatcom Eye Surgeons is a progressive ophthalmic medical and surgical practice. We are searching for an Ophthalmic Technician to add to our team. Work in a team-oriented clinical environment, taking pride in and providing outstanding patient care. Team members are responsible for providing accurate documentation and summarization of the ocular examination and recommendations. Maintained patient flow and communication regarding appointment status. Assist the Ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions, such as patient workups and special testing. May administer eye medications and instruct the patient in the care and treatment of eye conditions, apply dressings to the eye, and assist with in-office lasers and procedures.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Open and close exam lanes and ensure all supplies are stocked


• Communicate patient flow with the team to keep the schedules running on time


• Maintain a clean and tidy work environment and waiting area for patients


• Complete various documents and forms, such as consent forms, work releases, etc


• Take patients' medical histories and perform ophthalmic diagnostic exams


• Operate ophthalmic equipment


• Sterilize ophthalmic instruments or equipment to maintain them


• Help instruct the patient in the care and treatment of eye conditions


• Ensure all medical records are accurate and complete


• Triage phone calls from patients and outside contacts


• Maintain flexibility and perform other duties as required

Requirements

• Basic knowledge of medical coding terminology and conventions


• Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office products, and G-suite environment


• Willing to help in all areas, have the flexibility, and effectively work in a team environment.


• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously

• Demonstrated excellence in communication skills and ability to convey ideas and information verbally and in writing

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent.


• One (1) year of experience as an ophthalmic assistant, experienced COA or COT preferred.


• Maintains appropriate education, certification, licensure, and training.
