Job summary

Whatcom Eye Surgeons is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. This role supports ophthalmologists with patient workups, diagnostic exams, and instrument operation, contributing to accurate documentation and smooth patient flow.

The position offers training for the right candidate, a team-oriented environment, and opportunities to learn advanced procedures and in-office laser support. Prior ophthalmic experience is preferred but training is available.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required or preferred.
• One year ophthalmic assistant experience with COA/COT preferred.
• Willingness to train and work in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Open and close exam lanes and ensure all supplies are stocked.
• Communicate patient flow with the team to keep schedules on time.
• Maintain a clean and tidy work environment and waiting area for patients.
• Complete documents such as consent forms and work releases.
• Take patients' medical histories and perform ophthalmic diagnostic exams.
• Operate ophthalmic equipment.
• Sterilize ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
• Instruct patients in eye care and treatment.
• Ensure medical records are accurate and complete.
• Triage phone calls from patients and outside contacts.
• Maintain flexibility and perform other duties as required.

Whatcom Eye Surgeons is a progressive ophthalmic medical and surgical practice. We are searching for an Ophthalmic Technician to add to our team. Work in a team-oriented clinical environment, taking pride in and providing outstanding patient care. Team members are responsible for providing accurate documentation and summarization of the ocular examination and recommendations. Maintained patient flow and communication regarding appointment status. Assist the Ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions, such as patient workups and special testing. May administer eye medications and instruct the patient in the care and treatment of eye conditions, apply dressings to the eye, and assist with in-office lasers and procedures.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Requirements

• Basic knowledge of medical coding terminology and conventions


• Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office products, and G-suite environment


• Willing to help in all areas, have the flexibility, and effectively work in a team environment.


• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously


• Enjoy working with the elderly population


• Demonstrated excellence in communication skills and ability to convey ideas and information verbally and in writing

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent.


• One (1) year of experience as an ophthalmic assistant, experienced COA or COT preferred.


• Maintains appropriate education, certification, licensure, and training.
