Job summary

Northwest Eyes is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join a progressive ophthalmic medical and surgical practice in Renton, WA. You will assist ophthalmologists with patient workups, document examinations, and operate a range of ophthalmic equipment to support high-quality patient care.

The role requires excellent communication, teamwork, and attention to detail, with responsibilities spanning patient education, history taking, and safe instrument handling in a fast-paced clinical setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1 year ophthalmic assistant experience; COA/COT preferred.
• Proficiency with computers; MS Office and G‑Suite.

Responsibilities

• Summarize and document ophthalmologist findings and treatment recommendations accurately.
• Maintain patient flow and communicate appointment status.
• Educate patients and ensure understanding of instructions.
• Take and document patient medical histories.
• Operate ophthalmic equipment listed in the job description.
• Triages phone calls following ophthalmology standards.

Northwest Eyes, is a progressive ophthalmic medical and surgical practice, we are searching for an Ophthalmic Technician to add to our team. Work in a team-oriented clinical environment taking pride in and providing outstanding patient care. Team members are responsible for providing accurate documentation and summarization of the ocular examination and recommendations. Maintained patient flow and communication regarding appointment status. Assist Ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions, such as patient workups and special testing. May administer eye medications and instruct the patient in the care and treatment of eye conditions, apply dressings to the eye, and assist with in-office lasers and procedures.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Quickly and accurately summarizes and documents what the Ophthalmologist says during an examination, including but not limited to the proper charting of the examination, documenting additions to the chief complaint, assessment, and recommendations for treatment (including justification of decisions reached when appropriate).
• Maintains an awareness of the patient’s communication when the Ophthalmologist is providing instructions as it may necessitate the scribe repeating information and/or providing patient education materials for the patient to review at home.
• Ensures the patient understands all instructions.
• Takes and documents patients' medical histories.
• Operates ophthalmic equipment, such as Auto Refractor, Retinoscopes, Phoropters, Slit Lamp, Pentacam/Topography, Wavescan, IOL master/instar, Projectors, Zeiss OCT, and Heidelberg OCT.
• Pupil evaluation, Pachymetry, Humphrey Visual Field Testing, Tonometry, Color Vision
• Extraocular Muscle Function Testing & Hirschberg Testing.
• Van Herick measurements, Worth 4-Dot test, Stereopsis testing.
• Triages phone calls from patients and outside contacts following the standard of care for Ophthalmology and office policies.
• Sterilize instruments and maintain ophthalmic instruments or equipment.
• Assist patients in inserting or removing contact lenses.

Requirements

• Basic knowledge of medical coding terminology and conventions.
• Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office products, G-suite environments.
• Willing to help in all areas, have the flexibility and effectively work in a team environment.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Demonstrated excellence in communication skills, and ability to convey ideas and information verbally and in writing
• Professional appearance, strong interpersonal skills, and patient confidentiality.
• A strong organization with an attention to detail.

Education And Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One (1) year experience as an ophthalmic assistant, experienced COA or COT preferred.
• Maintains appropriate education, certification, licensure, and training.
