Job summary

Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, CA seeks an Ophthalmic Technician I to support ophthalmologists with diagnostic procedures. Under supervision, you will perform angiography, photography, visual field tests and slit lamp assessments, and help prepare patients for exams or procedures.

Responsibilities include operating and maintaining ophthalmic equipment, documenting findings, and ensuring patient safety and adherence to protocols.

Qualifications

  • Two years practical experience as Ophthalmic Medical Assistant or one year training as Ophthalmic Technician
  • General knowledge of ophthalmic diseases, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment
  • Ability to operate/maintain ophthalmic equipment
  • Strong written and verbal skills for patient history assessment and medical records documentation

Responsibilities

  • Performance of fluorescein angiography (FA)
  • Perform fluorescein and iris angiography
  • Perform fundus and slit lamp photography
  • Develops black and white ophthalmic photographs and maintains photographic suite
  • Performs ICG fluorescein digital imaging
  • Conducts visual field testing using Goldman perimeter and Humphrey automated perimeter
  • Takes axial length measurements (A-scans) and performs B-scans
  • Performs slit lamp applanation and advanced tonometry
  • Performs fundus photography and slit lamp tonometry
  • Performs keratometry and measures corneal curvature for intraocular lens patients
  • Performs corneal endothelial cell count using specular microscope
  • Checks visual acuity, uses lensometer and examines patient for color vision abnormalities
  • Obtains patient history information and educates patient; records progress and reports abnormal findings to physician
  • Prepares patients for examinations, treatment or surgery; dilates eyes and administers medicated drops per protocol
  • Initiates chart requests and assists with informed consents and documentation
  • Serves as first assist in OR or minor procedure room; passes instruments
  • Maintains professional image, equipment accuracy, safety and quality standards
  • Establishes courteous relationships with patients and staff
  • Follows Universal Precautions and reports safety incidents
  • Participates in department QA activities
  • Performs other duties as required
