Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification (COA, COT, or COMT) is preferred. If you are not certified (COA, COT, or COMT), you must be certification eligible and must obtain certification (COA, COT, or COMT) within one (1) year of employment.

Position Summary:

The Ophthalmic Assistant assists physicians in providing patient care by preparing patients for examination and diagnostic testing.

Position Key Accountabilities:

Essential Functions

  • Prepares patients for physician's exam. Performs testing based on patient needs and physician preference.
  • Responsible for preparing exam rooms for patients. Maintains instruments and equipment.
  • Obtains chief complaint, medical/surgical, family history current medications, and adverse drug reactions.
  • Assists with prescriptions refills as directed by the physician. Obtains Prior Authorizations for medications, answers patient questions/calls.
  • Assists in organizing and planning of patient care and follow-up, including major/minor procedures and diagnostic testing. Assists Ophthalmologist with surgical procedures as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Has ability to complete tasks in this competency effectively.
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation required
  • COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant Must be certification eligible and must obtain COA certification within one (1) year of employment

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent requiredGraduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) preferred

Minimum Experience:

None1 year of clinical experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
