Job description

Ophthalmic Assistant (40 hours Bellevue)

Job Summary

Assists and is trained to perform a variety of eye care duties to support eye care providers in examining and treating eye disorders.

  1. Completes required classroom training and reading assignments, including the Independent Study Course for Ophthalmic Assistants. Performs patient care under supervision during initial training, and completes skills competency check-offs.
  2. Prepares examination and treatment rooms by cleaning, stocking, and arranging supplies and equipment, requiring bending, reaching, and moderate lifting of up to 45 pounds.
  3. Reviews appointment schedules, interviews patients to obtain ocular history, and assists in patient preparation for procedures, including communication and charting.
  4. Performs basic vision screening examinations using ophthalmic instruments, recording data such as visual acuity and color identification.
  5. Administers eye medications as ordered by the provider following proper procedures.
  6. Cleans and maintains ophthalmic instruments.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Registered Medical Assistant (Washington) within 2 months of hire.
  • Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate within 24 months of hire from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, computer proficiency in MS Windows, and strong communication skills.
  • Preferred: Experience with contact lens patients, ophthalmology or optometry practice, and relevant medical knowledge.
  • Certifications such as Medical Assistant-Certified or Interim Medical Assistant-Certified are preferred.
