Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (40 hours Bellevue)

Job Summary

Under direct supervision of the Department Manager and guidance of the provider, performs a wide variety of eye care duties to assist medical providers in the examination and treatment of eye disorders, utilizing advanced ophthalmic techniques and procedures. Focuses on members/patients and their needs, developing and maintaining productive relationships. Actively seeks understanding of member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs. Builds rapport and cooperative relationships, considering how actions affect members and responding promptly to meet their needs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring compliance with Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies. Demonstrating quality in work habits and clinical practice, ensuring patient safety, and reporting hazards or incidents promptly.
  • Preparing examination and treatment rooms by cleaning, stocking, and arranging supplies and equipment, which involves bending, reaching, and moderate lifting of up to 45 pounds.
  • Reviewing appointment schedules, greeting and escorting patients, assisting in preparation for procedures, and documenting patient information in electronic medical records.
  • Performing vision screening examinations, recording data for interpretation, including visual acuity, stereopsis, color testing, tonometry, EOM, pupil assessment, CVF, slit lamp exams, and lensometry.
  • Executing additional technical skills as directed, such as keratometry, retinoscopy, refractometry, potential acuity, visual field testing, photography, ultrasound, and contact lens procedures.
  • Scribing medical findings, assisting during procedures, sterilizing instruments, and maintaining ophthalmic equipment.
  • Scanning and uploading medical documentation, performing clerical duties like scheduling, record keeping, and patient check-in/out.
  • Performing other duties, including training new employees and transporting equipment and patients as needed.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 4-10s, rotating RDOs.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Registered Medical Assistant (Washington) within 2 months of hire.
  • Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology at hire.
  • Basic Life Support certification at hire.

Additional Requirements:

  • Computer proficiency in MS Windows and keyboarding skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, anatomy, physiology, systemic and ocular diseases, emergencies, and microbial control fundamentals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with contact lens patients and products.
  • Experience in ophthalmology or optometry practices.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical or ophthalmic assistant program.
