Job summary

Savage is hiring a boiler operator to safely start up, operate, monitor, and shut down an 82,000 lb/hr watertube boiler at our facility. The role requires hands-on boiler operations, chemistry testing, and adherence to safety and LOTO procedures.

You will perform routine monitoring, manage emissions systems, document logs, and support maintenance. A background in industrial boiler operations and a proactive problem-solving mindset are essential.

Qualifications

• Prior experience operating industrial boilers, preferably watertube boiler.
• Strong working knowledge of boiler operations, including startup, shutdown, chemistry control, and blowdown practices.
• Experience working in an industrial environment such as mining, power generation, petrochemical, refining, or heavy manufacturing.
• Strong understanding of Safe Work Permits and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
• Mechanically inclined with the ability to troubleshoot equipment and systems.
• Demonstrated commitment to maintaining safe work practices.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond effectively to operational challenges.
• Willingness to develop additional technical knowledge related to emissions controls, boiler optimization, and plant systems.

Responsibilities

• Safely start up, operate, monitor, and shut down an 82,000 lb/hr Superior watertube boiler.
• Perform routine boiler operations, including: boiler chemistry analysis and control, chemical adjustments and corrections, continuous and intermittent blowdowns.
• Operate and monitor emissions control systems, including SCR system operation and handling anhydrous ammonia bottles.
• Conduct routine inspections of boiler, auxiliaries, and systems; monitor parameters; troubleshoot and take corrective action.
• Communicate daily operating activities and system status; maintain logs and maintenance documentation.
• Initiate and document work orders for maintenance; follow Safe Work Permits and site safety requirements.
• Support general plant operations, housekeeping and minor maintenance tasks.
• Become proficient in steam generation and supporting systems.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Safely start up, operate, monitor, and shut down an 82,000 lb/hr Superior watertube boiler.
• Perform routine boiler operations, including:
  • Boiler chemistry analysis and control (feedwater and boiler water testing)
  • Chemical adjustments and corrections
  • Continuous and intermittent blowdowns
• Operate and monitor emissions control systems, including:
  • SCR system operation, switching, and handling anhydrous ammonia bottles
• Conduct routine inspections of boiler, auxiliaries, and associated systems to ensure safe and efficient operation; monitor operating parameters such as pressure, temperature, flow, and combustion performance; identify abnormal conditions, troubleshoot issues, and take corrective action as required.
• Communicate daily operating activities and system status with operation leaders; maintain accurate and up-to-date operating logs, inspection records, and maintenance documentation.
• Initiate and document work orders for maintenance and repairs; follow Safe Work Permits, LOTO procedures, and site safety requirements at all times.
• Support general plant operations as needed, including assisting with inspections, housekeeping, and minor maintenance tasks, while maintaining high standards of housekeeping in boiler and equipment areas.
• Become proficient in all aspects of steam generation and supporting systems.

Physical Requirements

• Able and willing to work outside in all weather conditions.
• Ability to work at heights, swing a 10‑lb sledgehammer, walk extensively on uneven terrain, lift up to 50 lbs, and stand on uneven surfaces for prolonged periods.
• Willingly and able to work within an MSHA‑regulated mining environment.
• Candidates must successfully complete a criminal background check, drug and alcohol screening.
• Ability to attend and pass all required training, including site‑specific safety training, Anhydrous Ammonia, InPit Driving Left hand Traffic Training, Skid Steer, Tellahandler, and any additional training required for the job site.
