Job summary

Active Construction Inc is seeking a Union Operating Engineer to operate and maintain heavy construction equipment on outdoor sites across Tacoma and surrounding areas. The role involves operating cranes, bulldozers, excavators, graders, and related machinery while ensuring safe and efficient project execution.

You will read and interpret blueprints, perform minor repairs, and coordinate with laborers, engineers, and project managers to meet schedules and quality standards.

Qualifications

A Union Operating Engineer is a skilled tradesperson who operates and maintains heavy construction equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, excavators, loaders, and other machinery used in construction, mining, and industrial projects.

Job Responsibilities

• Equipment Operation – Operate heavy machinery such as cranes, bulldozers, graders, pavers, forklifts, and excavators.
• Maintenance & Repairs – Inspect, maintain, and perform minor repairs on equipment to ensure proper functioning.
• Site Preparation – Assist in grading, excavation, and other site preparation tasks.
• Safety Compliance – Follow OSHA regulations and safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
• Reading Blueprints – Interpret construction plans, grade stakes, and survey marks to complete tasks accurately.
• Collaboration – Work with other construction professionals, including laborers, engineers, and project managers, to complete projects efficiently.

Skills & Qualifications

Requirements

• Membership in the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) or other relevant union.
• Completion of or enrollment in an apprenticeship program or equivalent experience.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required for some roles.
• Ability to pass drug screen.

Work Environment

• Primarily outdoors on construction sites, highways, industrial plants, and mines.
• May involve long shifts, overtime, and work in extreme weather conditions.
