Job description

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is one of North America’s premier processors, buyers, sellers, and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds and is a key supplier to the metals industry of North America. FPT is a wholly-owned business of Cleveland-Cliffs and has an immediate opportunity for the Operations Supervisor at the Chicago Heights, IL location. The Operations Supervisor is responsible for weighing all inbound and outbound vehicles, inspecting loose loads, directing them to proper unloading areas, and assisting in the details of purchases.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure adherence to safety standards including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), remove hazards as identified, and maintain cleanliness of site.
  2. Confers with plant personnel and plans and allocates the use of material handling equipment such as conveyors, cranes, tractors, and trucks.
  3. Directs workers engaged in keeping records of materials received and used.
  4. Accurately inspects incoming materials ensuring correct weights, material description and grade for all loads and verifies invoices.
  5. Inspects machines and equipment and directs workers engaged in maintenance and repair work.
  6. Manage, arrange and schedule pickups and deliveries with carriers.
  7. Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
  8. Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
  9. Interprets job orders to workers and assigns duties.
  10. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
  11. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase the efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.
  12. Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  13. Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  14. Maintains time and production records.
  15. Communicate effectively with transportation, customer, management and employees.
  16. Assists in yard duties where needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma/GED and must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Experience in scrap industry preferred.
  3. Previous supervisor or team lead experience.
  4. Proficient in MS Office programs (Excel, Outlook, Word).
  5. Excellent customer oral and written communication skills.
  6. Problem-solving, analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making.
  7. Collaborative; builds and works with teams.
  8. Ability to coach and mentor.
  9. Pre-Employment background, physical, and hair drug screen required.
