Position Overview

Assists in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. An Operations Pharmacy Technician I performs specific drug distribution and preparation tasks under the supervision of a pharmacist, following standard procedures and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technicians registered with the state after June 30, 2014, must be nationally certified within 15 months of hire (PTCB or EXCPT).
  • Must be registered with the state Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire (except Pennsylvania).
  • In Maryland, national certifications are waived.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or post-high school education in a science field, or a graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.
  • Six months of pharmacy technician experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

This section describes the general nature of work for this position. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  1. Prepare unit-dose medications, deliver medications, and manage drug supplies.
  2. Read prescriptions and prepare medications, including special formulations for pediatric and geriatric patients.
  3. Understand standard pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations, and symbols.
  4. Communicate with patients or caregivers regarding medication needs and scheduling.
  5. Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances, maintaining records.
  6. Inventory management: replacing outdated medications and replenishing supplies.
  7. Prepare non-parenteral medications, including oral solutions for pediatric patients.
  8. Label parenteral and prescription products appropriately.
  9. Perform arithmetic calculations for medication dosages.
  10. Follow departmental standards for speed and accuracy.
  11. Prepare and label prepackaged medications, maintaining related records.
  12. Maintain inventory and supplies.
  13. Answer phone calls and direct them appropriately.
  14. Keep pharmacy areas clean and organized.
  15. Perform duties regulated to pharmacists, such as receiving oral prescriptions, consulting with prescribers, handling confidential patient information, checking medications, and advising patients, which can only be performed by pharmacists.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements

Must be able to walk, stand, or sit for long periods, lift up to 30 pounds, push 50 pounds, and have good dexterity. The work environment is typical of a pharmacy setting, with reasonable accommodations available for disabilities.
