Job description

The Position

Genentech is embarking on a multi-decade transformation of its South San Francisco campus, and we are seeking a highly motivated, pragmatic Operations Manager to serve as the strategic operational partner and Chief of Staff to the Head of the IDO. In this high-impact role, you will be the central operational engine—translating abstract strategies into actionable plans, developing scalable processes, and driving cross-functional alignment. By taking ownership of program delivery, governance, and organizational effectiveness, you will enable the Head of IDO to focus on strategic vision while ensuring the overall transformation runs seamlessly across all business units.

In this position, you will act as a force multiplier across the Campus Development team, bridging the gap between executive vision and day-to-day execution. You will establish central repositories, drive organizational change management, and champion continuous learning by building robust training programs and standard operating procedures. If you thrive in dynamic, complex environments, possess a deep project management toolkit, and excel at distilling technical expertise into high-impact strategy, this role offers an unprecedented opportunity to help shape the future of our flagship campus.

The Opportunity
  • Operational & Program Governance: Manage the IDO work plan, governance calendar, approval workflows, and action-tracking systems to ensure leadership decisions are properly executed, documented, and escalated.

  • Process & Methodology Standardization: Develop, communicate, and maintain standardized methodologies, tools, templates, and central repositories to establish consistent, audit-ready best practices across project teams.

  • Strategic Initiative Execution: Translate abstract strategies into actionable plans while owning the portfolio risk register to proactively address critical issues requiring executive attention.

  • Stakeholder Alignment & Engagement: Build comprehensive cross-functional engagement plans across Design, Procurement, Finance, Site Services, and Corporate Communications to align decision-making authority and expectations.

  • Executive Support & Communication: Organize key leadership forums, staff meetings, and quarterly all-hands sessions while drafting high-impact executive narratives and supporting external communication efforts.

  • Onboarding & Capability Building: Act as the primary point of contact for onboarding internal and external team members, establishing training frameworks and a PM Academy to upskill the organization.

  • Change Management & Organizational Culture: Serve as an Organizational Change Management (OCM) champion to mitigate change fatigue, encourage seamless adoption of new operating models, and foster department learning.

Who You Are

You are a growth-oriented, pragmatic practitioner with an exceptional ability to drive results. You balance high-level strategic thinking with a willingness to get into the operational weeds.

  • Experience: 6–9+ years of experience in business operations, program management, or IDO leadership. Experience in a large-scale enterprise undergoing significant business transformation (construction, engineering, or pharma/biotech) is highly desired.

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Administration, Organizational Development, Communications, or Engineering.

  • Execution & Aptitude: You possess a solid toolkit of Project Management (PM) and Change Management methodologies (e.g., ADKAR, Lean, Agile, PMP). You are highly resourceful, self-motivated, and demonstrate strong emotional intelligence.

  • Stakeholder Management: You excel at navigating complex, ambiguous stakeholder dynamics and building consensus. You have an exceptional ability to proactively extract, distill, and synthesize high-value information from busy Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) with minimal administrative burden.

  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; equally effective at executive storytelling to the C-suite and coordinating deeply technical workstreams.

This position is not eligible for relocation.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $136,100 - $252,700 USD Annual.
