Job summary

Peabody Energy seeks an Operations Manager Trainee for the Shoal Creek Mine in Oakman, Alabama. The program rotates through production, engineering, safety, and maintenance to develop future engineers or supervisors.

The trainee will complete learning objectives, work under seasoned managers, and may transfer to other sites or take on additional hours. Safety policies and a structured development plan are emphasized.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mine, Civil, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, and decision‑making skills.
  • Experience from a summer internship or work in a large underground mining operation is preferred.

Overview

We are seeking an Operations Manager Trainee to join our engineering team at the Shoal Creek Mine in Oakman, Alabama. The role focuses on learning key mining activities through a rotational program, with the goal of progressing to an engineering or supervisory position after completion.

Responsibilities
  • Rotate through production, outby, engineering, safety, maintenance, preparation, and environmental departments.
  • Complete learning objectives, tasks, and project assignments under the guidance of experienced managers.
  • Present work results or projects to the Operations Manager or Department Manager.
  • Substitute for absent supervisors when required.
  • Follow all Company safety policies and procedures at all times.

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and organized under frequent interruptions.
  • Experience from a summer internship or work in a large underground mining operation is preferred.
  • Preferred experience: supervisory, drafting/AutoCAD, knowledge of Federal and State mining laws.
  • Ability to work shift schedules, including day, evening, night, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand, walk, and sit for extended periods on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Walk up and down stairs/steps and climb on/off equipment and ladders.
  • Perform repetitive hand and wrist motions and lift 25–50 pounds regularly, with occasional lifting up to 75 pounds.
  • Work safely in extreme conditions, including changing weather, dust, mud, and varying noise levels.
Safety Sensitive Role
  • Must not have uncontrolled conditions or medical conditions that could impair the ability to operate machinery.
  • Vision: at least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) in each eye; field of vision at least 70° horizontally.
  • Hearing: no more than 40dB average loss in the better ear.
