About the Role

Base Location: Portsmouth

Salary: £58,630 - £68,098 and a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing, and family.

The role

An Operational Planning Engineer in the Network Management Centre (NMC) will be responsible for planning all outage requirements on the electricity network up to and including 132kV (EHV). They ensure engineers can plan their work and operate the network by conducting power system analysis and implementing contingencies for faults.

The role involves balancing network access for capital and revenue work while maintaining secure customer supplies and supporting OFGEM's incentives.

This position is critical within the control room monitoring SSEN's southern network, which serves over 3.1 million customers and operates 24/7, 365 days a year. Flexibility in working hours is available, but presence in the control room during core hours is required.

You will
  • Conduct power system analysis, managing planned outages and faults, ensuring network security and minimizing customer impact.
  • Manage risks when changing the EHV network, supporting safety and emergency responses.
  • Schedule and update EHV outages to meet DOC2 timelines, coordinating with all relevant parties.
  • Collaborate with Control Engineers, Protection Engineers, System Planners, Design Engineers, National Grid, EHV Customers, other DNOs, Management, Project Managers, and Cartographers.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
You have
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or similar experience, ideally working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Knowledge of electricity network design, operation, protection, and safety.
  • Previous engineering experience within a distribution network, preferably with EHV networks.
  • Familiarity with statutory and regulatory requirements, industry codes, and standards.
  • Experience with Power System Analysis software (PSS/E, PowerFactory, or similar) and electrical theory.
  • Ability to analyze large data sets and present results clearly.
