Operating Room Technician (Surgical Technologist), Part time

Located in Largo, Prince George’s County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) aims to improve access to primary and ambulatory care, serving as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients and expanding community health offerings.

Job Description

Position Summary: Passes instruments during surgeries, applying aseptic techniques. Arranges sterile setups and inventories supplies. Performs duties requiring certification and surgical experience or training.

Principal Duties:
  • Assist RN with patient admission to OR, ensuring timely process.
  • Prioritize and plan care based on surgical needs.
  • Select and organize equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Ensure completeness and functionality of surgical tools and supplies.
  • Be attentive to patient needs—physiological, psychosocial, safety, emotional.
  • Assess patient condition upon admission and notify RN of critical findings.
  • Support cultural practices that do not interfere with care plans.
  • Follow surgical hand scrub, gowning, gloving policies.
  • Prepare surgical instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
  • Follow policies for sponge, sharp, and instrument counts.
  • Drape patient and assist with aseptic draping techniques.
  • Pass instruments and supplies during surgery.
  • Handle specimens and cultures per policy.
  • Maintain a quiet, focused environment in the OR.
  • Assist with patient comfort, transfers, and physical needs as delegated.
  • Practice life-saving measures when necessary.
  • Maintain aseptic technique intraoperatively and report breaches.
  • Operate sterilization and mechanical equipment properly.
  • Use preference cards for equipment and supplies.
  • Follow precautions for hazardous materials and sharps disposal.
  • Use supplies cost-effectively and maintain cleanliness post-procedure.
Customer Service & Co-worker Relations
  • Greet patients and staff courteously, maintaining professionalism.
  • Communicate effectively, respecting confidentiality and protocols.
  • Respond promptly to inquiries and concerns.
  • Offer assistance proactively and resolve conflicts professionally.
  • Respect schedules, attend meetings punctually, and communicate absences.
Self-Management & Qualifications
  • Dress appropriately, wear ID badge visibly.
  • Complete assignments timely and adhere to safety and confidentiality policies.
  • Maintain professional growth and competency.
  • Certification from an accredited Surgical Tech program required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS-HCP) certification required.
  • Less than 1 year experience required; 1-3 years preferred.
  • Experience in OR tech or equivalent training preferred.
Skills & Working Conditions
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Physical ability to lift, push, reach, and communicate effectively.
Additional Details

Work under constant supervision, with conditions including lifting, bending, and extended walking. Compensation ranges from $35.97 to $41.36 per hour. Benefits info available in the UMMS Benefits Guide.
