Job summary

University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center is seeking an experienced Operating Room Technician to join a high‑performing surgical team. The role involves preparing sterile instrumentation, scrubbing, passing instruments, and maintaining sterile technique across diverse procedures in a fast-paced perioperative setting.

You will support OR workflow, assist with patient positioning, and ensure compliance with infection prevention and safety standards.

Qualifications

• CST certification is required.
• AHA BLS certification is required.
• 6 months OR Technician/Surgical Technologist experience is required.
• 1–3 years OR/Surgical Technologist experience preferred.
• Cardiac and trauma proficiency is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies for operative procedures.
• Scrub and assist during surgeries while preserving aseptic technique.
• Pass instruments and supplies to surgeons during operations.
• Perform surgical counts with the RN circulator.
• Prepare operating rooms between procedures and restock as needed.
• Operate and troubleshoot surgical equipment and power devices.
• Assist with patient positioning, transfers, and intraoperative support.
• Identify breaches in sterile technique and address promptly for patient safety.
• Support efficient OR workflow with multidisciplinary teams.
• Maintain infection prevention and perioperative standards.

Position Summary

Join the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center's Operating Room team as an Operating Room Technician. This is an exceptional opportunity to become part of a high-performing surgical team committed to delivering safe, exceptional patient care in a fast-paced, high-acuity perioperative environment. In this role, you will work alongside surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and multidisciplinary surgical teams while supporting a diverse range of surgical procedures. You will play a vital role in maintaining efficient operating room workflows, ensuring surgical readiness, supporting sterile technique, and contributing to outstanding surgical outcomes and an exceptional patient experience. This role is ideal for an experienced Operating Room Technician who thrives in a collaborative surgical environment, demonstrates strong attention to detail, and is committed to patient safety, teamwork, and clinical excellence.

Schedule Details: 4 x 10-Hour Shifts | 8:45 p.m. to 7:15 a.m. | Every Other Weekend & Holidays Required.

Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification required.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain sterile surgical instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for operative procedures.


• Scrub and assist during surgical procedures while maintaining strict aseptic technique and sterile field integrity.


• Pass instruments, supplies, and equipment to surgeons and procedural teams during operations.


• Perform surgical counts in collaboration with the RN circulator according to department policy.


• Prepare operating rooms between procedures including cleaning, turnover, and restocking of supplies/equipment.


• Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain surgical equipment, instrumentation, and power devices.


• Assist with patient positioning, transfers, transport, and intraoperative patient support activities as delegated.


• Identify breaks in sterile technique and escape concerns appropriately to support patient safety.


• Support efficient OR workflow while collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, RNs, and interdisciplinary staff.


• Maintain compliance with infection prevention, safety, sterilization, and perioperative standards of care.


• Other duties as assigned.

Licensure & Experience

• Valid Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification, required.


• Valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, required.


• 6 months Operating Room Technician/Surgical Technologist experience experience, required.


• 1 - 3 years of Operating Room/Surgical Technologist experience strongly preferred.


• Cardiac and trauma proficiency preferred.
