Job summary

Valley Medical Center is seeking an Operating Engineer I - Boiler Operator for the VMC Main Campus in Renton, WA. The role is nights, full-time, 40 hours per week under the Plant Management department. You will operate and maintain boiler and related utilities to support hospital operations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the full range of work involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, modification and operational checks and testing.
  • Perform periodic equipment inspections and follow maintenance schedules.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and initiate repairs.
  • Plans and lays out work utilizing sketches and specifications provided.
  • Monitor, analyze and restore essential systems such as power, vaccines, lighting and nurse call.

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Facilities Engineering Department

HOURS OF WORK: Various shift work

RESPONSIBLE TO: Manager of Plant Engineering

Prerequisites

High School graduate or equivalent preferred.

Washington State driver's license.

Five Years Of Experience In Healthcare Setting Preferred.

Five years of experience in Steam Plant Operations or Maintenance

Grade 4 Steam License. Grade 3 steam license preferred

Must be able to obtain Grade 3 steam license within 180 days of hire

Qualifications

Be able to work in a team setting and work effectively with other shop personnel.

Be detail oriented and solve technical and mechanical problems quickly.

Have a comprehensive knowledge in Building Automation Systems (BAS)

Experience operating complex utility systems including HVAC systems, Domestic Water systems, Steam system, Electrical systems, and electronic systems

Have a valid Steam License and must meet training and experience requirements

Position requires ability to assess situations rapidly and make appropriate decisions, based on sound judgement.

Problem solving and planning skills essential, as well as, the ability to work in a fast-paced, high volume work environment.

Physical requirements include: having adequate vision and hearing to perform daily responsibilities; the ability to lift seventy five (75) pounds waist high regularity and occasionally heavier items; being subject to considerable standing, stooping, kneeling and bending.

The ability to work in overhead, stretched, cramped and awkward positions.

The ability to work on ladders and scaffolds.

The ability to wear a properly fitted respirator while performing work; and the ability to read, write and speak English.

Requires ability to maintain professional manner when dealing with employees and the public.

Regular and punctual attendance is a condition of employment.

The position requires work to be performed both inside and outside in all type of weather.

The incumbent is frequently exposed to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment as well as dampness, water, mud, and fumes.

The incumbent can potentially be exposed to electrical burns, infections, chemicals, gases, bruises, cuts, electric shocks, dust, dirt, and skin and lung irritation as well as exposure to more serious injuries as the result of falls or power tool use.

When work in a hazardous location is required, the employee is required to utilize proper safety clothing, gear and equipment

Performance Responsibilities
Generic Job Functions

Performs the full range of work involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, modification and operational checks and testing at Valley Medical Center and associated clinics.

Unique Job Functions

Perform periodic equipment inspections and follow maintenance schedules.

Diagnose equipment malfunctions and initiate repairs.

Plans and lays out work utilizing sketches and specifications provided.

Determines tools required and estimates necessary materials or parts needed, such as wiring, fittings, contacts, breakers, etc.

Monitor, analyze and restore the loss of "Essential Systems" e.g. Normal Power Distribution, Vaccine refrigerators, Pneumatic Tube System, Nurse Call and paging system.

Notify VMC managers and Initiate corrective action.

Troubleshoot, maintain and repair machinery, mechanical devices, system controllers and related mechanical equipment.

Troubleshoot and repair electrical circuits and related power equipment, per VMC guidelines.

Troubleshoot and repair electronic systems such as the fire alarm system, pneumatic tube system, nurse call system, and building control system.

Troubleshoot, repair and replace pipe assemblies and plumbing fixtures, per VMC guidelines.

Troubleshoot, and repair HVAC and refrigeration units, per VMC guidelines.

Maintain medical center buildings in good working order and appearance to VMC standards, using correct product application to respective surface.

Perform assigned duties during drills and emergencies.

Demonstrate proper radio and telephone communication techniques
