TITLE: Journey Tech I - Electrician JOB OVERVIEW: Performs the full range of work involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, modification and operational checks and testing of electrical equipment and control systems at VMC and associated clinics. AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Facilities Engineering. HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. RESPONSIBLE TO: Manager, Facilities Engineering.

Prerequisites:
  • High School graduate or equivalent.

Unique Physical/Mental Demands, Environment And Working Conditions:

Regular and punctual attendance is a condition of employment. Capability for extensive bending, lifting, and walking, and for handling hazardous substances used in the course of work. Physical requirements, include: having adequate vision and hearing to perform daily responsibilities; the ability to lift seventy-five (75) pounds waist high regularity and occasionally heavier items; being subject to considerable standing, stooping, kneeling and bending. The ability to work in overhead, stretched, cramped and awkward positions. The ability to work on ladders and scaffolds. The ability to wear a properly fitted respirator while performing work; and the ability to read, write and speak English. Requires ability to maintain professional manner when dealing with employees and the public. The position requires work to be performed both inside and outside in all type of weather. The incumbent is frequently exposed to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment as well as dampness, water, mud, and fumes. The incumbent can potentially be exposed to electrical burns, infections, chemicals, gases, bruises, cuts, electric shocks, dust, dirt, and skin and lung irritation as well as exposure to more serious injuries as the result of falls or power tool use. When work in a hazardous location is required, the employee is required to utilize proper safety clothing, gear and equipment.

  • Essential Responsibilities and Competencies

Serves as a journey level electrician. Installs, maintains and repairs electric wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels, motor control centers and outlet boxes. Inspects, maintains, cleans, repairs, tests and adjusts a wide variety of electrical controls. Following maintenance schedules, inspections, or work orders, performs maintenance services, diagnoses systems or equipment malfunctions and repairs as necessary. Provides support to other systems with electrical interface and components such as various mechanical systems and coordinates work with other trade personnel to effect multi-discipline repairs. Provides technical advice concerning system and equipment capabilities and limitations. Performs the full range of tasks associated with the repair, overhaul, maintenance, servicing and installation of 120/208 volt and 480/277 volt three phase systems. Electrical systems include emergency power systems, automatic transfer switches and bypass/isolation switches, switchboards, feeder panels, lighting and appliance branch circuit boards, indoor dry type transformers, motor control centers, feeder bus duct, patient wall units, low voltage lighting controls, medical/surgical lighting, automatic doors, fire alarm systems, nurse-call systems, variable frequency drives, etc. Plans and lays out work utilizing sketches and specifications provided. Determines tools required and estimates necessary materials or parts needed, such as wiring, fittings, contacts, breakers, etc. Diagnoses and locates malfunctions. Disassembles, repairs, replaces, services and adjusts as required.
