Job summary

Macalester College seeks an Operating Engineer to monitor, maintain, and operate the central heating plant and chillers during the academic year. The role includes third-shift duties from 11pm to 7am on a rotating pattern, with summer adjustments to a first-shift maintenance schedule.

After a 6-month probation, the successful candidate will join International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 70. This is a union position with generous benefits and retirement contributions.

Qualifications

  • Minnesota First Class B Boiler Operator license.
  • Strong knowledge of high-pressure steam boiler operation, principles, applications, and dangers.
  • Knowledge of electricity, HVAC, and plumbing for testing and maintenance.

  • Monitor boiler water quality and administer chemical treatment as indicated.
  • Monitor building automation systems for temperature control and alarm response.
  • Follow safe work practices and environmental, health and safety policies.
  • Provide Central Plant support for special events, including weekends and holidays.

Job description

Macalester College seeks to hire an Operating Engineer to work in its Facilities Services Department during the academic year.

This position will be responsible for monitoring, maintenance, and operation of the central heating plant high-pressure boiler system and central chillers during the academic year, September thru May.

and is responsible for general campus maintenance duties during the summer.

Hours & Schedule

40 Hours - Third Shift

Compensation

$45.68 per Hour

This is a union position.

After the 6 month probationary period, the successful candidate will be required to join the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local Number 70.

Shift Details

As the Operating Engineer, you will be part of a team that makes up a 3 shift around-the-clock operation monitoring and maintaining our high-pressure boilers during the heating season which is mid-October to mid-May. During this period the position is a Third Shift shift position (11pm-7am) On a rotating day pattern, 7-on, 2-off, 7-on, 2-off, 6-on, 4-off.

Boiler schedules are created well in advance of the heating season to allow for scheduling.

During the cooling season mid-May through mid-October the shift transitions to a maintenance position with a flexible shift schedule, typically 1st shift.

Responsibilities
  • Testing, monitoring, maintenance, repair, and operation of high-pressure boilers and related equipment.
  • Monitor boiler water quality and administer chemical treatment as indicated through testing.
  • Monitor building automation systems to ensure proper temperature control and alarm response to campus buildings and equipment.
  • Follows accepted process for adjustments to boiler plant equipment.
  • Project schedule awareness, knowledge of and adherence to accepted best practices.
  • Perform preventive/predictive maintenance as directed.
  • May perform testing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of equipment and systems related to heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues in campus buildings.
  • This position will be part of the maintenance on-call rotation list.
  • Provide Central Plant support for special events on campus, which may include weekends and/or holidays.
  • Follow safe work practices and all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications
  • Required Minnesota First Class B Boiler Operator's license.
  • Possesses exceptional knowledge of high-pressure steam boiler operation, principles, applications, techniques, procedures and dangers of such systems.
  • Must possess knowledge and skills in electricity, HVAC, and plumbing in sufficient depth to perform testing, maintenance, and repair of systems.
  • Significant work experience with building energy management computer systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree, or vocational or technical school degree in an equipment/building maintenance discipline.
  • 5 years experience maintaining equipment and systems in a high pressure boiler plant.
