Job summary

Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, Houston, is hiring an Operating Engineer to join a fast-paced facilities team. You will perform operations and maintenance on hospital equipment, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems, in compliance with departmental, hospital, and regulatory codes.

The role involves rounds, monitoring, minor repairs, and documentation to ensure reliable utilities and comfort for patients and staff.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • License/certifications listed above are required.
  • 3 years’ experience as a service technician.
  • Preferred experience in a hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors equipment, responds to alarms and emergencies and performs maintenance duties to ensure hospital equipment and systems are functioning properly.
  • Monitors boilers, chillers, AHUs, pumps, air compressors, water heaters, cooling towers and other systems for safe, efficient operation.
  • Performs engineering rounds and checks equipment for proper operation and minor repairs.
  • Maintains documentation in engineering logs and rounds sheets.
  • Performs installation and repairs of failed equipment and parts on utility systems; coordinates shutdowns and notifications.
  • Performs corrective maintenance on ceilings, floors, lighting, and door hardware.
  • Responds to emergencies throughout the hospital property.
  • Maintains accountability and professional behavior with strong teamwork and communication.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on buildings and systems and demonstrates ownership in assigned zones.

Education

High School Diploma or GED
STATENG1 – Stationary Engineer, 1st Grade by the City of Houston
STATENG2 – Stationary Engineer, 2nd Grade by the City of Houston
STATENG3 – Stationary Engineer, 3rd Grade by the City of Houston
JRNYPLUM – Journeyman’s License Plumbing by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners
JRNYELEC – Journeyman’s License Electricl by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
DLA – Dept of Labor Apprenticeship by the Department of Labor
SMA – Systems Maint Administrator by the Building Owners and Management Institute International
SMT – Systems Maintenance Technician by the Building Owners and Management Institute International
MASTELEC – Master Electrician by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
HVACB WC – HVAC State B with C endorse by the Texas Department of Licensing and regulation

Job Description

We are searching for an Operating Engineer – someone who works well in a fast‑paced setting. In this position you will perform operations and maintenance activities including, but not limited to: engineering rounds, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, general maintenance and repairs of hospital equipment and buildings including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems in accordance with departmental, hospital, and regulatory agency codes.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Monitors equipment, responds to alarms, and emergencies and performs maintenance duties in assigned areas to ensure facility equipment and systems are functioning properly.
  • Monitors all operating equipment and systems (boilers, chillers, AHU’s, pumps, air compressors, water heaters, cooling towers, etc.) to ensure they are operating properly and safely at maximum efficiency.
  • Performs engineering rounds and checks equipment for proper operating functionality and performs minor repairs and adjustments as needed.
  • Maintains documentation to accurately record readings on rounds sheets and equipment failures and events in appropriate engineering logs.
  • Performs installation and repairs of failed equipment and parts on utility systems according to established standards and within acceptable timeframes. Follows up to ensure equipment is repaired and functioning properly. Provides notification of equipment shutdowns to appropriate leadership and department personnel.
  • Performs corrective maintenance duties including, but not limited to: replacement of ceiling tiles, floor tile, cove base, light fixtures, bulbs, lamps, and door hardware.
  • Responds to all emergencies as required throughout the hospital property.
  • Performs corrective maintenance duties on buildings, building systems, and equipment as assigned according to standards established by management team.
  • Performs preventive maintenance duties on buildings, building systems, and equipment as assigned according to standards established by management team.
  • Demonstrates ownership for responsibilities in assigned zone and other designated areas.
  • Demonstrates accountability for customer service and professional behavior through personal work ethic, teamwork and effective communication skills.
