Join Our Dynamic Faculty: Open Rank Professor Position in Social Work

New Mexico State University's School of Social Work invites exceptional scholars and educators to join our vibrant academic community in Las Cruces, New Mexico. We have a 9-month Open Rank Professor position available starting Fall 2027—an exceptional opportunity to join multiple new colleagues in our growing program.

Shape the Next Generation of Social Work Join a close-knit faculty at an R-1 institution where you'll have opportunities for border studies, rural practice research, and meaningful state and community partnerships to advance your scholarship. You'll teach and mentor students in both our BSW and MSW programs while making impactful contributions to our school, university, and broader community. As part of the College of Health Education and Social Transformation, you'll be at the forefront of preparing compassionate, skilled professionals who create positive change.

The faculty member must be able to provide undergraduate and graduate instruction across the School's curriculum, delivered in in-person, online synchronous, and online asynchronous formats, and grounded in CSWE/EPAS competencies. The successful candidate will maintain an active program of scholarship appropriate to rank, including peer-reviewed publication and, where applicable, external funding or grant-seeking activity. The faculty member will also mentor undergraduate and graduate students, contribute to advising, and — particularly at the rank of full professor — may be expected to take on leadership roles such as committee chairing or program coordination. Additional responsibilities include service to the School, the University, the profession, and the broader community, along with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive pedagogy.

Required Education and Experience
  • PhD in Social Work
  • MSW from a CSWE-accredited program
  • Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including experience delivering instruction in in-person, online synchronous, and online asynchronous formats
  • Experience developing curriculum aligned with CSWE/EPAS competencies
  • An established or emerging record of peer-reviewed scholarship, with a research agenda that complements existing faculty strengths within the School
  • Experience securing or contributing to extramural funding
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, scholarship, and service
Preferred Qualifications
  • An established record of peer-reviewed scholarship and external research funding, with credentials appropriate to appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor
  • Experience teaching in a PhD-level social work curriculum
  • Active or license-eligible New Mexico social work licensure appropriate to the position's teaching focus
  • A minimum of three years of post-MSW social work practice experience
  • Experience with academic leadership, program coordination, or committee service
  • Experience mentoring students and junior faculty
  • Experience working with Hispanic-Serving Institutions or similarly diverse student populations
  • Experience working with Native American students and communities, including knowledge of Tribal sovereignty, culturally responsive pedagogy, Indigenous social work practice or Indigenous research paradigms
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) proficiency
  • Engagement with professional organizations such as NASW, CSWE, or state licensing boards
