NC State University in Raleigh seeks an Open Rank Lecturer or Teaching Assistant Professor to teach undergraduate courses in World Languages & Cultures. Appointments may be part-time or full-time for Summer 2026 and 2026-2027 with potential renewal.

The department offers courses across Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, and more; the successful candidate will contribute to general education and major programs while upholding the department's teaching standards.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or equivalent, for Lecturer.
• Bachelor’s degree plus 18 graduate credits also considered.
• PhD required for the Assistant Teaching Professor rank.
• Degrees/credits must be completed by start date.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate courses in World Languages & Cultures according to departmental needs.
• Deliver instruction in multiple languages offered by the department.
• Contribute to curriculum development and student mentorship.
• Participate in service and departmental activities.

About the Department

The Department of World Languages & Cultures at NC State provides students with a broad and intimate understanding of the rich and varied cultures of our globe - understanding that is built on solid competence of spoken and written skills in the language(s) you choose. At the undergraduate level, the Department offers students the opportunity to major in the following concentrations leading to the B.A. degree: Arabic, Asian Languages (Chinese, Japanese & Hindi/Urdu), French, German Studies, and Spanish. Students who are eager to make teaching their career can pursue the B.A. Degree in French, German, Spanish or Chinese Education. We also offer minors in the following: Arabic (through Middle Eastern Studies), Chinese, Classics (Greek and Latin), French, German Studies, Hindi/Urdu, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and World Literacy. In addition, we teach classes in Persian and English as a Second Language. At the graduate level, we have an M.A. program in World Languages & Cultures with two separate concentrations: one in French, and one in Spanish. Each of the concentrations incorporates literature, linguistics, and culture courses. We also have an M.A. program in TESOL. To provide students with more possibilities for languages or levels that may not be taught at NC State, we have developed an inter-institutional collaboration with other schools in the UNC System through a system-wide Language Exchange, so that we may provide greater language opportunities for our students.

Essential Job Duties

The successful candidate(s) will teach undergraduate courses in a specific discipline in World Languages & Cultures according to departmental need and employee knowledge, skills and ability. Courses may be taught in any of the languages for the classes that we offer. Appointments may be available part time for Summer 2026 and/or 2026-2027 Academic Year, all with the possibility of renewal.

Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Master’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent education and/or professional experience, for Lecturer.
• Bachelor’s degree plus 18 graduate credit hours will also be considered for Lecturer.
• PhD is necessary for rank of Assistant Teaching Professor.
• Degrees/credits must be received by start date.

Other Required Qualifications

• Must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal communication skills.
• Must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

• Instruction experience and proof of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level are preferred.
