Job summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Systems Administrator II to manage and secure our IT infrastructure supporting Facilities operations, utilities generation, building automation, and critical operational technologies.

You will administer physical and virtual servers, storage, networked systems, and backup solutions, participate in upgrades and migrations, provide advanced troubleshooting, and mentor junior staff while aligning with IT and security standards.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Sciences with one year of related experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences with three years of related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, configure, administer, and maintain server and building automation platforms, including physical and virtual infrastructure, operating systems, virtual machines, and supporting runtime environments.
  • Monitor system performance, availability, and capacity; perform routine maintenance and apply updates and patches
  • Plan and execute system upgrades, migrations, lifecycle replacements, patching, and infrastructure improvements while minimizing service disruption and maintaining compatibility with dependent systems.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex server, network, virtualization, storage, backup, and application issues; perform advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis to restore services and prevent recurring incidents.
  • Participate in on-call and after-hours support rotations to ensure rapid response to outages and critical incidents
  • Document system configurations, procedures, and changes to support continuity and compliance
  • Provide advanced technical consultation and recommendations to users, client departments, leadership, and project teams regarding infrastructure architecture, system requirements, application hosting, security, and technology solutions.
  • Lead and coordinate infrastructure projects, system implementations, upgrades, migrations, and technical improvements involving internal IT teams, client departments, vendors, and other university stakeholders.
  • Provides technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior IT staff, supporting knowledge transfer, professional development, and consistent administration practices across the team
  • Perform other duties as assigned
