Job summary

Nightwing in Springfield, Virginia is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support ongoing programs onsite. The role requires enrollment in a Mechanical Engineering program with CAD experience and a hands-on mindset.

You will assist senior engineers on multidisciplinary projects, design tools, create fabrication drawings, perform basic testing, rapid prototyping and report writing. Strong communication and MS Office skills are highly valued.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an accredited college pursuing a M.S. or B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
• Rising Junior or Senior by the start of Summer 2027; a GPA of 3.0+ in a 4.0 scale is desired.
• U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and retain a U.S. Top Secret Clearance with a successful Counterintelligence (CI) polygraph (if hired full time after graduation)
• Experience or coursework with CAD software package for mechanical design and documentation (SolidWorks preferred)
• Fundamental engineering coursework and knowledge
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Proficient with MS Office tools including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Project
• Ability to adapt to shifting program and task priorities
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary, collaborative team environment balancing diverse project tasks and types
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Background check and drug screen required (every external new hire in the U.S.), drug screen only performed on re-hires who have been gone for more than 1 year]
• Coursework in Mechanical Engineering
• Coursework in Finite Element Analysis
• Experience working in a team environment
• Experience with mechanical assembly
• Working knowledge of common hand and powered tools
• Experience with laboratory testing
• Experience with computational analysis software (e.g. Matlab, Python, MathCad)

Responsibilities

• Support multidisciplinary engineering activities and senior engineers on projects.
• Design and analysis of tools/mechanisms; create fabrication drawings; mechanical testing; rapid prototyping and assembly; write reports and support design reviews.
