Job summary

UMass Charles River Campus seeks a Departmental Assistant (Charles River Campus Culinary Assistant) to perform routine food preparation, cooking, cleaning and serving in a food service operation. May operate a cash register for cash sales.

Position is part-time and on-site at the Newton, MA location. Requires one year of cooking experience and food handler certification within six months of appointment. Prolonged standing and kitchen duties are expected.

Qualifications

• One year cooking experience in hospitality or food service.
• Ability to cook a variety of simple meals and assist with more complex dishes.
• Knowledge of sanitary methods for handling and serving food.
• Ability to operate kitchen equipment and follow recipes.
• Ability to follow simple written and oral instructions.
• Willingness to work varied shifts, including weekends and nights.
• Must obtain food handler certification within six months of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Cook food in large quantities following recipes and SOPs.
• Prepare simple dishes and assist more complex dishes as needed.
• Clean cooking equipment, work areas, and dining spaces.
• Transport and serve food to diners, and assist with cash transactions if required.
• Roast, fry, boil, season meats and vegetables as part of daily meals.
• Ensure proper storage of foods in sanitary conditions.
