Job summary

University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking a Kitchen Assistant (Departmental Assistant) to support dining services in campus locations. This position performs routine cooking, cleaning and serving duties, following recipes and health guidelines, and may operate a cash register for sales.

The ideal candidate will have at least one year of cooking experience, be able to work varied shifts including nights and weekends, and obtain a food handler certification within six months.

Qualifications

• The safe handling and preparation of food according to established sanitary methods.
• Ability to read and follow recipes, and to prepare simple meals.
• One year of cooking experience and willingness to perform varied shifts.
• Ability to train and supervise student employees in a kitchen setting.
• Ability to work as part of a team and communicate clearly with staff.

Responsibilities

• Cooks food in large quantities by following recipes and SOPs.
• Reads computer generated recipes and menus for simple meals.
• Maintains cleanliness of cooking equipment and dining areas.
• Transports and serves food to diners and assists with more complex dishes.
• Operates kitchen utensils and equipment to prepare soups, salads, desserts, gravies, etc.
• Reports food and menu issues to cooks; makes coffee and handles trash and disposal.
