Job summary

Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a Backend Data Engineer for 100% onsite work, in Norfolk, VA, to support Navy/DoD data infrastructure and reporting needs. You will build and maintain data pipelines, ingest disparate sources, and prepare data for Power BI and BI reporting platforms.

The role emphasizes backend data engineering, ETL/ELT, SQL data stores, and collaboration with a BI-focused teammate to ensure reliable enterprise reporting. Active Secret clearance required.

Qualifications

• 3–4 years of hands-on Data Engineering experience
• Active Secret clearance
• IAT Level II certification
• Hands-on experience developing data pipelines and ETL/data integration solutions
• Strong hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory (ADF)
• Strong SQL/SQL database experience
• Experience with enterprise data transformation, staging, and aggregation
• Experience integrating disparate, legacy, or multiple systems & moving data between them
• Ability to ingest, transform, store, stage, aggregate, and prepare unfamiliar datasets for downstream use
• Experience supporting data used by Power BI, Business Intelligence, or enterprise reporting environments
• Preferred: SSIS, Python, PowerShell, XML, Splunk, Azure/cloud data environments, data warehousing/enterprise data repositories

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain enterprise data pipelines supporting Navy and DoD environments
• Use Azure Data Factory (ADF) to build pipelines and connect legacy systems and data repositories
• Ingest data from diverse sources and determine extraction and integration approaches
• Transform, cleanse, stage, aggregate, and prepare data for reporting and analytics
• Develop and maintain SQL queries and work with SQL databases
• Integrate systems and move data between platforms and repositories
• Troubleshoot data pipeline failures, connectivity issues, data quality problems
• Collaborate with stakeholders to understand data sources, dependencies, and reporting needs
• Develop data solutions that feed Power BI and enterprise BI tools
• Document data flows, pipeline architecture, and dependencies
• Support evolving data environment with cloud and legacy tech
• Collaborate with front-end/BI Data Engineer to ensure reliable data for reporting
